Phoenix, AZ -- Cal State Dominguez Hills was
one strike away from sweeping its opponents on day two of the
Schutt Lead Off Classic, but Abilene Christian spoiled the fun by
rallying for a 5-3 win in the late game after CSUDH disposed of
Eastern New Mexico, 7-2, in the opener.
The Toros took a 2-0 lead in their 1st inning
at-bat against Eastern New Mexico, using a Jodi Nakawatase RBI
double and Katie Garcia fielders choice for the runs. After
the Zias cut the deficit in half with a solo blast in the top of
the 3rd, CSUDH exploded for five runs in the 5th to put the game
away.
In the frame, an infield error allowed
pinch-runner Jamie Portillo to score from 3B and advanced Erika
Gonzalez from 2B, where she reached after connecting for a double.
Jennifer Frazier followed with a sacrifice fly and, after
Nakawatasi belted her second double of the game to score Araceli
Martinez, Michelle Medina drove in the final two runs for the
Toros with a booming double.
Eastern New Mexico added a run in the 6th with
another solo shot off Toro hurler Jennifer Martinez, but it would
be too little, too late as CSUDH came away with the 7-2 win.
Nakawatasi and J. Martinez each tallied two hits in the win, while
Medina and Nakawatasi drove in two runs apiece.
In the circle, J. Martinez scattered 7 hits in
her complete game win as the Toros committed one error in the
contest.
Against Abilene Christian in the late game, the
Toros held a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the 7th when ACU
rallied for three runs in their 5-3 win. Frazier got the Toros
going in the 1st with an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1, after
which Frazier again did damage two innings later with a 2RBI
double. That's where the score stood until ACU notched a single
run in the 6th, and three in the 7th for the win.
Katie Jordan enjoyed a 3-for-4 game and Frazier
collected 2 hits to lead the Toros, while J. Martinez fanned 3
against 1 walk in the circle.
CSUDH continues the Schutt Tournament tomorrow
morning at 11:30 am, against the winner of WNMU vs. Tarleton State
match-up.
