SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State Dominguez
Hills, playing like a team that wants to regain a spot among the
West Region's top eight teams, avenged a first-round CCAA loss to
Cal State San Bernardino with a 56-38 victory Friday night over
the Coyotes before 233 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
The victory improved the Toros, ranked No. 9 in
the region, to 13-10 overall and 10-9 in the CCAA while the
Coyotes, ranked No. 7, slipped to 16-8 overall and 12-7 in
conference.
The Toros play at Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday while the Coyotes will host CCAA leader UC San Diego,
ranked No. 1 in the West Region, also at 5:30 p.m.
Brigayle Iglehart was the thorn in the side for
the Coyotes as she accounted for a game-high 21 points to go with
four rebounds, four steals and three assists in 33 minutes of
play. Alana Bailey had nine points, eight rebounds and three
steals while Michelle Kribell and Jessica Liang each had nine
points. All of Liang's points came from three-point range.
Coyotes junior Vanessa Wilt had a team-high 11
points and a team-high seven rebounds. A 60 percent shooter, Wilt
was just five of 13 from the floor thanks to a collapsing Toros
defense. Krystal Urzua had 10 points and three assists but was
just four of 15 from the field for CSUSB.
The Toros led 24-15 at the break and shot 44
percent in the second half (11 of 25) to finish at 40 percent for
the game. They hit six of 13 from the three (46 percent) and 10 of
14 from the foul line (71 percent).
The Coyotes, shooting 42 percent for the season
from the field, were held to just 27 percent (15 of 55) by the
aggressive Toros defense that denied the inside to Wilt and the
outside to everyone but Urzua. CSUSB was just four of 17 from
three-point range (23 percent) -- two each by Urzua and Rachel
Johnson.
The Toros forced 23 Coyotes turnovers in the
game.
The game was tied 7-7 with 13:54 left in the
first half and both teams went nearly five minutes without
scoring. Wilt broke the spell with a layup for a 9-7 Coyotes lead
with 8:59 left in the half but the Toros outscored CSUSB 12-4 over
the next four minutes to take a 19-13 lead.
Iglehart's layup early in the second half put
the Toros up 33-17 and the lead became 22 points at 42-20 on a
pair of free throws by Kribell with 10:55 to go in the game.
Dominguez Hills led by 22 points again at 52-30
on a three-pointer by Kribell with 4:41 left and both coaches
substituted freely after that.
