POMONA The Cal Poly Pomona womens
basketball team fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 63-58, Saturday
night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (7-18, 6-14) led by four
points with 9:08 remaining, but the Toros (14-10, 11-9) took the
lead for good with an 8-0 run and never relinquished it.
Ashley Moody had 18 points to lead the Broncos,
while Brigayle Iglehart had 18 points, eight rebounds and five
assists to lead three Cal State Dominguez Hills players in double
figures. Michelle Kribell had 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Brittney Blankenship had 10 points.
Cal Poly Pomona shot just 31.1 percent for the
game, including only 26.3 percent in the second half. The Broncos
held a 39-35 rebounding edge, but committed 18 turnovers to only
12 for the Toros. The Broncos made 26 of 33 free-throw attempts.
Moody hit 12 of 13.
The Broncos jumped out the gates quickly and
took a 14-4 lead on a jumper by Natasha Reed just 5:24 into the
game. The Broncos still led by six points, 28-22, after a jumper
by Vanessa Dominguez with 3:22 to go in the half. The Toros,
though, pulled into a 31-31 halftime tie when Aujanee Baldwin
scored with 19 seconds left.
The Broncos grabbed a six-point lead, 49-43,
with 11:31 to go after a pair of free throws by Moody and held a
four-point lead after a pair of free throws by Lauren Kitaguchi
with 9:08 left. The Toros then went on the 8-0 run and took the
lead for good. A jumper by Kribell broke a 51-51 tie and two free
throws by Kribell extended the lead to 55-51.
The Broncos closed to within one point, 58-57,
with 3:49 to go after a jumper by Reed, but Kribell countered with
basket to make it 60-57. A free throw by Moody cut it to 60-58,
but Iglehart scored with 47 seconds remaining to boost the lead to
62-58 and a late free throw by Iglehart completed the scoring.
Dominguez and Reed finished with nine points
each for the Broncos.
Cal State Dominguez Hills finishes the regular
season with a homestand next weekend, playing SF State on Friday
and Cal State Monterey Bay, Saturday. Cal Poly Pomona will return
to action on Friday at Cal State L.A.
