Carson, CA The CSUDH womens
basketball team has jumped up four spots in the latest West Region
poll, it was announced this afternoon by the NCAA, checking in at
the No. 5 spot.
The Toros currently hold a 14-7 Division II
record and an in-region record of 13-7.
Eight teams per region qualify for the
postseason, with the winner of both the California Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) and Great Northwest Athletic
Conference (GNAC) receiving automatic bids. The final regional
poll will determine which other six teams are awarded the six
at-large berths, with those teams joining the CCAA and GNAC
regular-season champions in the West Regional of the NCAA II
National Tournament, taking place from March 10-13 at a site to be
determined.
This season the Toros are led by a duo of
dynamic guards, who each bring variety and versatility to the
table. Junior transfer Brigayle Iglehart (San Diego,
CA/Grossmont College) is the Toros scoring leader with
11.9 points per game, with many of those points coming courtesy of
her driving ability. Providing the contrast to Igleharts
scoring style is long range shooter Jessica Liang (Alhambra,
CA/Mark Keppel HS), who is averaging 10.1 points per game.
Liang is doing her damage from beyond the arc, and currently leads
the CCAA in 3-point makes per game and is second in 3-point
percentage, also ranking in the top 41 in the nation in both
categories.
For the past three weeks the Toros have been
sitting at No. 9 in the West, but after a 56-38 romp at
regionally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino last Friday, followed
by a win at Cal Poly the next night, the Toros are in prime
playoff position, and hold their postseason fate in their hands.
Toros close out the 2006-07 regular season this
weekend as they host San Francisco State on Friday, and Cal State
Monterey Bay on Saturday, with tip off for both games scheduled
for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
