Toros Take Big Bite Out of Gators Men in 91-51 Landslide
Senior Trevon Bryant sets CSUDH all-time career block mark in blowout
March 2, 2007

Complete Box Score

Carson, CA - The Cal State Dominguez men's basketball team started strong and finished stronger, taking a 52-25 halftime lead and turning it into a 91-51 win over visiting San Francisco State as senior Trevon Bryant (Tifton, GA/Compton CC) collected two blocks on the night to become the Toros' all-time career leader in blocked shots with one game remaining in his storied career in Cardinal & Gold.

Cox Cable’s David Smock in a post-game interview with Trevon Bryant after Bryant’s record-setting night.

The Toros, now 11-15, 8-13 CCAA, played like a team on a mission from the opening tip, using a Jonathan Toliver (Inglewood, CA/Westchester HS) 3-pointer on the game's first possession, and turning that into a 25-9 lead on a Shamont Brown (Jamaica, NY/Riverside CC) trey at the 10:42 mark. CSUDH's defense, which applied pressure over the entire 94 feet of hardwood throughout the first 20 minutes, caused 10 SFSU turnovers, and converted 11 points off the Gators' miscues.

Toliver had a field day against the porous SFSU (6-20, 2-19 CCAA) defense, draining three 3-pointers en route to 15 first-half points. Jamel Ward (Los Angeles, CA/Inglewood HS) provided a spark off the bench with his 4-of-6 contribution as CSUDH connected for 48.7% of its shots from the field and held the Gators to just 32.1% as the Toros took a commanding 52-25 lead into the locker room.

After the break, the Toros increased their lead to 61-28 on a tip-in by Brown, before the Gators used a 10-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to 23, with the last three points courtesy of an Arcenio Ramirez 3-pointer at the 12:43 mark, prompting a quick Toro timeout.

Toliver made the timeout count as his trey on the Toros’ next possession brought CSUDH's lead back to 26 just 37 seconds later. With the Toros up 69-41 on another Toliver 3-pointer, CSUDH emptied its bench in cruising to the convincing 91-51 win, sweeping the season series from San Francisco State.

Toliver finished with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field, including 6-of-12 from behind the arc, while Ward contributed 16 and seldom-used Ryan Walton (Compton, CA/CS Northridge) made the most of his opportunity, draining three treys over a span of 1:35 to finish with a season-best 15 points. As a team, CSUDH shot a solid 45.1% and out-rebounded SFSU 50-38, while the Gators saw their shooting percentage dip in the second half to finish at 29.5%.

The only drama remained was when Bryant would break the mark, and the Tifton, Georgia native answered that emphatically with just 1:17 left in regulation by swatting a Kevin Piva attempt, sending the Friday night crowd into a frenzy. With that block, Trevon Bryant now stands atop the all-time CSUDH list for blocks in a career, bringing 96 total blocks into tomorrow’s regular season finale.

CSUDH will honor four seniors tomorrow night in a pre-game ceremony before hosting Cal State Monterey Bay in the final game of the 2006-07 season.
