Toros Tabbed 5th Seed at NCAA Women's D-II West Regional
CSUDH to face Alaska Anchorage on Friday, March 9 at 5:00 pm
March 4, 2007

CARSON, CA – On the heels of winning four-consecutive games and five of their last six to finish the regular season, including the regular season finale over Cal State Monterey Bay which gave head coach Van Girard his 250th career win, Cal State Dominguez Hills has earned the No. 5 seed and a date with 4th-seeded Alaska Anchorage in the first round of the 2006-07 NCAA D-II West Regional on Friday, March 9, with tip off scheduled for 5:00 pm in RIMAC Arena on the campus of host and top-seeded UC San Diego.

The Toros, who last made the postseason in 2004-05 before falling to Western Washington in overtime, 82-74, are led by juniors Brigayle Iglehart (San Diego, CA/Grossmont College) and Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS), who have combined for 36% of the Toros’ points and 74% of CSUDH’s 3-pointers.

CSUDH enters the eight-team regional tournament as the No. 5 seed after finishing the regular season with a 16-10 overall record and tying for fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) at 15-5.

“We put ourselves in a good position to get to the playoffs, and we’re very excited about the opportunity,” says Girard of his team’s return to the postseason. “With that said, we really want our players to understand that it’s not about being, it’s about doing. We believe we belong in the tournament, this was a goal we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year, and we’re very confident going in.
“Alaska Anchorage is a very good team and we know it’s going to be a battle,” he continues. “They beat Cal State Monterey Bay in early November, and because they’re big, we know we have to use our athleticism to keep them off the boards, deny post entry and be disruptive defensively. Bottom line, we’re going to go in and do what we do.”

The first-round action begins on Friday at 12:00 with No. 3 seeded Seattle Pacific facing No. 6 seeded Sonoma State, followed by No. 2 seeded Chico State facing No. 7 seeded Cal State San Bernardino at 2:30. After the Toros and UAA tangle at 5:00 pm, host and No.1 seeded UC San Diego will face No. 8 Western Washington at 7:30 pm.

In all, 64 teams received Division II berths nationwide and winners of the eight regional tournaments will advance to the Elite Eight, taking place from March 21-23 in Kearney, Nebraska, where the West region survivor will face the winner of the East regional.
