Brazell Stadium (Phoenix , AZ) -- The
homestanding Grand Canyon University Antelopes swept a Saturday
baseball doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills, picking up
7-3 and 5-3 wins. The Toros drop to 8-21-1 on the season.
In Saturday's opener, the Antelopes (15-14)
jumped on the back of another strong pitching performance by Pat
Lawler (4-1), who pitched six strong innings. Lawler was only
tagged for four hits and three runs, while striking out six to
earn his fourth win of the year.
The Lopes jumped on top of the Toros in the
bottom of third with three runs and scattered four more throughout
the game to earn the 7-3 victory.
Cody Johns had a big day at the plate for GCU,
going 4-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
David Leyva (2-3) was hit with the loss for
Dominguez Hills, as he allowed 11 hits and 4 runs over five
innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Antelopes (16-14) got all
of the offense they would need in the first two innings as they
plated one in the first and three in the fourth to hold off
Dominguez Hills (8-20-1) by a score of 5-3.
After the first two innings, Toros pitcher Gus
Hernandez (2-3) settled down by pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing
five runs and six hits. But, the effort was not enough as Ben
Corser (3-1) turned in a dominating performance by pitching a
complete game allowing three runs on five hits.
Cody Johns continued his hot hitting by going
2-3 with a double. Johns went 6-8 on the day for the Lopes.
Thursday and Friday CSUDH plays at UC San
