POMONA Cal State Dominguez took the opener, 7-6, but host Cal Poly Pomona came back behind the pitching of Jason Jordan and won the nightcap, 11-0, Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at Scolinos Field. Cal Poly Pomona (14-22, 7-17) snapped a three-game losing streak and beat the Toros (12-25-1, 8-16) for the first time in 10 decisions dating back to last season.

Cal Poly Pomona had 11 hits in the nightcap. The Broncos scored six times in the first inning and never looked back. Kirk Gross drove in four runs, while John Daniels had three hits, scored three times and drove in two.

Jordan tossed a four-hit shutout over the seven innings. He walked two and struck out five while improving to 2-2 on the season. The complete game was Jordan’s second of the season and he lowered his team-best earned run average to 2.59.

The Broncos struck for six quick runs to give Jordan some early support. Cal Poly Pomona scored all six runs after two were out. A.J. Cavaletto drew a one-out walk and Kenny Lane drew a two-out walk. Daniels doubled to score Cavaletto and, after a walk to Mike Evola, Greg Johnston delivered a two-run single to make it 3-0. Jordan Alcantar walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-0 and Gross had a two-run single to make it 6-0.

The Broncos added three more runs in the second. Daniels singled in a run and Anthony Dominguez singled in two more runs to give the Broncos a 9-0 lead. Cal Poly Pomona finished the scoring in the fourth when Gross singled in two more runs.

In the opener, Cal State Dominguez Hills erased a 5-0 deficit with a six-run fifth inning that came on the strength of a grand slam home run by Mateo Marquez and a two-run shot by Cody Puckett. Houston Hernandez had three hits in the game, including a single in the fifth inning that was the 200th hit of his Toro career.

The game also included a scary collision between Puckett, the Cal State Dominguez Hills shortstop and Chris Hunter, the Toro left-fielder. The two collided chasing a triple by Cal Poly Pomona’s Kyle Boggio. Hunter was down for several minutes and had to be helped off the field. He was taken to a nearby hospital for observation.

The Broncos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Boggio singled with two out, stole second and scored on a run-scoring single by Lane. Cal Poly Pomona added four runs in the third to make it 5-0. Gross homered to lead off the inning and, after Boggio and Lane were hit by pitches, Daniels belted a three-run home run.

The Toros, though, struck for six runs in the fifth to take the lead. Dustin Hicks doubled, Jerit Coleman walked and Matt Magallon reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Marquez then hit his seventh home run of the season to cut the Broncos’ lead to 5-4. After Hernandez singled, Puckett hit a two-run shot to give the Toros the lead.

The Toros got another run in the eighth. With Coleman breaking for second base and Hicks breaking for home, the Broncos threw to second and Hicks scored easily to make it 8-6. Cal Poly Pomona got one run back on a run-scoring groundout by Manny Navarro in the bottom of the eighth, but could get no closer. Gus Hernandez got the win for the Toros after going 6 2/3 innings. Matt Sannes worked the final 2 1/3 innings and got the save.

Bryan Jackson allowed only one run over three solid innings of relief for the Broncos.

CSUDH goes across town to Cal State L.A. for single games Thursday and Friday (2:00 p.m. starts), before hosting the same Golden Eagles Saturday in a doubleheader (11:00 a.m.).
