May 18, 2007

Carson, CA - Toros interim head baseball coach Murphy Su’a took time off recruiting to accept an invitation by the South Bay Athletic Club and spoke to over 30 members at their luncheon, held at the South Bay Grill in Torrance.

Preceded by the head softball coach from San Pedro High School, Tony Dobra, the Daily Breeze’s Mike Walder took the podium next to introduce coach Su’a to the members of the South Bay Athletic Club.

Coach Su’a touched on the success of the 2006 Toros baseball squad, the struggles of the 2007 team, as well as some of the challenges facing the players, coaches and the program as a whole.

The first-year head coach then fielded questions about recruiting, scholarships and funding while stressing his desire to see his players not only succeed on the field, but in the classroom as well, then touching on the joy he received from training young coaches.

In addition, the former BYU All-American outlined some new endeavors to help bring some much needed attention to the CSUDH baseball program, including hosting pre-draft workouts for the Oakland A’s and the St. Louis Cardinals, as well as putting together a Senior All-Star team with Cal State Monterey Bay head coach Rich Aldrete that would compete against semi-professional teams such as the Long Beach Armada.

Coach Su’a finished his time to a roaring applause and received a handshake in the one hand a bottle of wine in the other as he bid the members of the South Bay Athletic Club farewell.
