Carson, CA - Seniors Houston Hernandez (La
Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) and Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal
State L.A.) have both been named to the ABCA/Rawlings 2nd-Team
All-West Region team, two weeks after being named to the All-CCAA
teams.
Hernandez, who split his time between second
and third base during the season, had his best season as a Toro as
he raised his batting average from .310 to .340 in his final year.
The La Mirada nation became the CSUDH all-time career doubles
leader on May 4 in his final home game on Toro Field on May 4,
2007, a 17-6 romp over Cal State San Bernardino.
Marquez, who received two 2nd-Team All-Region
honors last week Daktronics and NCBWA now has been
voted by the committee that best knows the game of baseball, in
this case the West Region baseball head coaches.
The centerfielder/leadoff man had a career year
for the Toros as he increased every offensive statistical category
in his final campaign, finishing the year with a .357 batting
average, nine homeruns and 43 runs batted in.
The CCAA again swept the three major all-region
awards, with Cal State L.A.s Jeff Carroll taking of Player
of the Year honors, Sonoma States Brent Lysander being name
Pitcher of the Year, and Cal State L.A.s Pat Shine receiving
Coach of the Year honors.
