Hernandez and Marquez Earn ABCA/Rawlings 2nd-Team All-Region Honors
Marquez receives third all-region award of the season
May 21, 2007

Carson, CA - Seniors Houston Hernandez (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) and Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) have both been named to the ABCA/Rawlings 2nd-Team All-West Region team, two weeks after being named to the All-CCAA teams.

Hernandez, who split his time between second and third base during the season, had his best season as a Toro as he raised his batting average from .310 to .340 in his final year. The La Mirada nation became the CSUDH all-time career doubles leader on May 4 in his final home game on Toro Field on May 4, 2007, a 17-6 romp over Cal State San Bernardino.

Marquez, who received two 2nd-Team All-Region honors last week — Daktronics and NCBWA – now has been voted by the committee that best knows the game of baseball, in this case the West Region baseball head coaches.

The centerfielder/leadoff man had a career year for the Toros as he increased every offensive statistical category in his final campaign, finishing the year with a .357 batting average, nine homeruns and 43 runs batted in.

The CCAA again swept the three major all-region awards, with Cal State L.A.’s Jeff Carroll taking of Player of the Year honors, Sonoma State’s Brent Lysander being name Pitcher of the Year, and Cal State L.A.’s Pat Shine receiving Coach of the Year honors.
