Deborah C. Sears Scholarship

Scholarship Amount:  $500 minimum

The “Deborah C. Sears Scholarship” is awarded to full-time undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence, community service and/or CSUDH school involvement, and are interested in improving the communities in which they live.  Scholarship recipients should also exemplify the mission and goals of the California State University, Dominguez Hills’ Black Faculty and Staff Association, which is to encourage and promote the professional, academic and personal development of others. This scholarship is non-renewable. Previous award recipients may not apply.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Any full-time CSUDH continuing undergraduate student - must have completed at least one semester at CSUDH at the time the scholarship is awarded.
• Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (includes CSUDH & transfer courses) - copy of unofficial transcripts required.
• Statement of community service and/or CSUDH school involvement - provide evidence of service (i.e. references).
• One letter of recommendation - submit letter in a sealed envelope with application packet).
• 1000 word essay. Topic: How my education will assist in improving the community in which I live.

Miriam Mathews African American Visions Scholarship

Scholarship Amount:  $500 – 1000*

The Miriam Matthews African American Visions Scholarship is designed to assist CSUDH students of African American descent and consists of $500-1000. Two scholarships will be awarded annually. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.

                                      Eligibility Criteria for First-Time Scholarship Applicants

1. Attend CSUDH full-time and be fully matriculated (undergraduate = 12 units; graduate = 6 units).

2. Have a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.70; unofficial copy of CSUDH transcripts required.

3. Be nominated by a faculty member during the spring semester (letter of nomination).

4. Be a resident of the greater Los Angeles area (address verification may be required).

5. Personal statement: Explanation of need for financial assistance with college expenses and     

    explanation of strong level of community service. Provide evidence of service (i.e. references).

                                         Eligibility Criteria for Renewal Scholarship Applicants

A student who receives a scholarship under this program may be eligible to apply for a one-time renewal of the scholarship. Renewal candidates must meet each of the following requirements:

 1. Maintain required GPA for scholarship and satisfactory academic progress determined by CSUDH.

2. Show proof of successfully completing full-time academic study the previous academic year; submit unofficial copy of CSUDH transcripts.

3. Personal statement: Explanation of need for continued financial assistance with college expenses and explanation of continued level of community service.

*If a scholarship recipient is also awarded other financial aid, it may be necessary to reduce the amount of the scholarship in order to preserve the student’s eligibility for state and/or federal grant financial aid.
