Ghost Bread

The grain must be stone-ground, but the grain can be

Almost anything at hand -- wheat, millet, barley,

Even grass. The millstones are to be cleaned six times

Before grinding with water and lemon juice

And towelled dry. Grind the grain only coarsely.

Add salt, add water, and a lock of your darkest hair,

To be removed after baking. Knead into round, flat loaves

The apparent diameter of the moon and the thickness

Of your index finger. Now build a fire over a flat rock.

Let the fire burn to coals, then take away the coals.

Place the dough on the rock and heap soil over it.

Clays and dark loams are ideal. Let cook until

You are tremendously hungry. Remove the soil and reserve.

Scrape the soil off of the bread crust; your hair

Will have risen to meet it. Serve.

Prepared properly

Ghost bread is delicious and filling. Prepared improperly,

It is fairly tasty and not filling. Take care to eat

The correct amount. Eat too little, you will continually

Be bumping into furniture, you will spend many hours

Searching for small but essential objects.

Eat too such, first your heels will begin to pain you.

You will walk on the balls of your feet. Then on your toes.

Eventually your voice will rise in pitch. You will need

To be tethered down to your home or place of business.
