If There Were No Moon

If there were no moon there would be no more fear of the night.
If there were no moon Lorca would have been stillborn, and Reed and Calvino.
Nobody would be able to say I still love you and then sneeze,
Nobody would have invented the ladder.
The lowest branches of the oak tree would be a thousand feet above our heads.
There would be no nipples,
to become a mother would be to die of thirst if there were no moon.
There would be one more way to escape the wheel of rebirth.

Lava would be blue as naval piping if there were no moon,
The blues and the Parthenon and death would all collapse into themselves.
We would sleep outside with our mouths open
and our teeth would be filled with tiny craters if there were no moon.

If there were no moon, our lives would wax and wane without our suspecting it.
We would all constantly be flinging rocks into the sky.
