COURSE OVERVIEW
An overview of the history, mission, and function of the California
community college. Topics include:
- Brief history of higher education as a framework for community colleges
- The California Education Master Plan and the mission of the community college
- Student characteristics, including demographic and enrollment trends
- Curriculum, teaching hours and the Carnegie Rule
- Accreditation, WASC, and AACJC
- Community college finance, State appointment, the ops plan, and budget management
- FTES, FTEF, and enrollment management
- Shared governance, the AFT, and policy development
- State minimum requirements for community college teaching, academic preparation, and equivalency
- Function of the California Community College State Chancellors Office
- The impact of Federal and State grant dollars
COURSE ORGANIZATION
The course consists of twelve learning modules. One
module is completed each week of the semester. Each module
consists of standard assignments. Standard assignments include:
- Readings in the text
- Critique of text material
- Current Topics Writing Assignment
- Discussions Forum
- Chat Room Participation
