M.A. in Education, Counseling Option (48-54 units)
The Counseling Option program prepares candidates for careers in a variety of counseling organizations. These organizations include two and four year colleges and universities and public and private service agencies. The program is designed to provide candidates with a broad conceptual knowledge base in theory and help candidates develop specific counseling skills applicable to a wide range of counseling areas. M.A. candidates often concurrently pursue a credential program in Pupil Personnel Services which is required to function as a school counselor or school psychologist in the public schools.

School Counseling Credential (54 units) with Child Welfare and Attendance (57 units)
The PPS Credential in School Counseling prepares candidates with the knowledge and skills to promote the academic, social-emotional, and career development of multi-cultural and linguistically diverse pupils in the public schools. The Child Welfare and Attendance Specialization authorizes work specifically related to student attendance and truancy prevention/remediation.

Master’s Degree Admission Requirements:

I. University Application Documents submitted directly to the Office of Admissions & Records.

▪ Admission to the University. http://www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/

▪ Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university;

▪ One (1) sealed official copy mailed to Office of Admissions;

II. Program Application Documents submitted as a complete packet to the Student Services Center, SCC 510.

▪ Program application with check or money order for $50.00 payable to CSUDH;

Transcripts: One sealed official copy accompanying the program application;

▪ A minimum of 3.0 or better grade point average in the last 60 units of upper division undergraduate coursework (or, a minimum score of 1000 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Aptitude Test, or a minimum score of 500 on the Miller Analogies Test);

Transcripts: One sealed official copy accompanying the program application.

Three recommendations from individuals who can evaluate your potential for graduate study and as a school counselor, such as employers, supervisors, and professors. Letters must be on official letterhead of the recommender’s place of employment.

Two-Three (2-3) page Statement of Purpose.  Your statement should include: a comprehensive profile of yourself as a prospective counselor; a description of relevant educational, occupational, and personal experiences that have contributed to your personal development and your decision to become a counselor; personal strengths and areas you have identified for growth; and your perception of the role of a school or college counselor and why you believe you would be successful in this position based on your interpersonal qualities, interests, and any special skills you may possess.

▪ Completion of the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). The GWAR and Graduation Writing Examination (GWE) Handbook is available online and can be downloaded. The website is: http://www.csudh.edu/oir/testing/handbook.htm

▪ Students applying to the PPS Credential must also show evidence of having passed the CBEST and evidence of a CA teaching credential or a Certificate of Clearance.

IMPORTANT: If you are a current CSUDH student and want to change into the PPS program, you must complete a program application and file a Request for Post-Baccalaureate/Graduate Change of Objective form with the Graduate Studies Office at the same time you apply to the new program.
