What is R.I.C.A.?

  • Reading Instruction Competence Assessment--"to ensure that candidates for Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials and Education Specialist Instruction Credentials possess the knowledge and skills important for the provision of effective reading instruction to students...to develop competent, thoughtful readers who are able to use, interpret, and appreciate all types of text." (R.I.C.A. Registration Bulletin, p.1)
     

  • Must be passed by...

    • Candidates for initial Multiple Subject Teaching credentials (preliminary or professional clear), with or without emphases

    • Candidates for initial preliminary level I or professional level II Education Specialist Instruction Credentials (special education)

  • Domains measured by R.I.C.A.

    • Domain I - Planning and Organizing Reading Instruction Based on Ongoing Assessment

    • Domain II - Developing Phonological and Other Linguistic Processes Related to Reading

    • Domain III - Developing Reading Comprehension and Promoting Independent Reading

    • Domain IV - Supporting Reading Through Oral and Written Language Development

R.I.C.A. Preparation Mini-Course

  • C.S.U.D.H. MULTIPLE SUBJECT & SPECIAL ED. CREDENTIAL CANDIDATE* WHO ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN STUDENT TEACHING OR HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE SEMESTER OF SUPERVISED FIELDWORK.

  • Candidates from other campuses should contact their own institution for assistance.

  • The R.I.C.A. Preparation Course is offered through Extended Education two Saturdays preceding each exam, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The fee for CSUDH students is $40. Please call (310) 243-3741 to find out workshop dates and to sign up.

The kit is available for seven-day checkout by CSUDH Multiple Subject and Special Education Credential candidates only; $40 refundable deposit.
