CSUDH Nisei Diploma Project

Nisei Diploma Recipients

Louise Isako Miyake Morita (left) and Terushi Naritoku (right)
at the CSU Dominguez Hills Commencement on May 21, 2010,
where they received honorary degrees almost 70 years
after their college dreams were interrupted
due to their imprisonment during World War II.

An honorary degree ceremony for former Japanese American students who attended California State University campuses during World War II, was held on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Home Depot Center Tennis Stadium on the campus of CSU Dominguez Hills.

This is part of a series of ceremonies held by the University of California, California State University and California Community College systems for Nisei who were attending college during World War II and were unable to graduate because of being forcibly removed and incarcerated at prison camps.

Hundreds of students of Japanese ancestry who were removed from CSU campuses in 1941-1942 and forced to delay or abandon their college education while in the camps, have been granted California State University special honorary degrees. The CSU Dominguez Hills campus serves as the Southern California host for the convenience of former CSU students who might not be able to travel to their home campuses, but could attend the special ceremony in the Los Angeles area.
