Department of Occupational Therapy Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Occupational Therapy Program to recruit, educate, and mentor a diverse, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural student body, and to provide faculty leadership to the local community and global healthcare efforts.
The Occupational Therapy Program seeks to fulfill this mission by educational efforts guided by principles of “student centered learning” implemented by use of cooperative learning strategies. Students will be challenged to independently pursue solutions to clinically based problems and will be instructed in use of evidence based data to support decisions in implementation of “best practice”. Clinical reasoning focused educational experiences will be provided in classroom and community settings. Students have many opportunities to engage in practical applications of OT theory through service learning activities situated in area clinics, hospitals and community service centers.
Graduates will enter the profession, not as passive recipients, but rather as proactive advocates for persons with disabilities and their families. Further, they will enter practice with knowledge that will facilitate the consumer’s journey toward healthy and personally meaningful occupational engagement.
