New Opportunity for Student/Faculty Participation
The primary purpose of the On-Line Journal of Nursing Scholarship is to provide experiences for undergraduate and graduate nursing students to learn about reporting, critiquing, and publishing scholarly papers. Students will serve as editors, assistant editors, editorial board members, peer-reviewers, and authors of manuscripts. The publication will provide "hands-on opportunities" for undergraduate and graduate students to become familiar with the process and mechanics of disseminating scholarly papers.
In our world of escalating change, formal courses are only part of nursing education. Innovative educational experiences that provide active participation in developing the skills expected of graduates not only increase excitement in learning, they add to personal satisfaction with the educational process. Instructors regularly encourage students to publish their academic work and clinical projects in scholarly journals. Yet, these suggestions go unheeded due to a lack of time and resources to assist students to follow through. The On-Line Journal of Nursing Scholarship can provide the infrastructure and resources necessary for students to see their own work published. Students will actively learn about the various phases of disseminating nursing knowledge by reporting, critiquing and publishing research studies and scholarly activities.
Scholars and clinicians in various disciplines use journals similar to the On-Line Journal of Nursing Scholarship to communicate their ideas to colleagues in their field and to professionals in other disciplines interested in their findings. Before the paper is published it goes through a process of peer review. The purpose of peer review is to subject the ideas in the paper to constructive suggestions for altering, explaining, or clarifying the content and for making a judgment as the worth or value of the paper. To publish papers in the On-Line Journal of Nursing Scholarship, students go through two levels of peer review. The manuscript that the student wants to publish must first be reviewed by at least two classmates and the course instructor. If it is a paper that was not an assignment, the student works with the advisor and two classmates and uses their suggestions to make revisions in substance and expression, or continues to develop the project or ideas. Once this initial review is completed, the student (along with classmate and instructor/ advisors) decide whether to submit the paper for journal peer review in the On-Line Journal of Nursing Scholarship. There are similarities of this second level of review to the first level with classmates and instructor, but this second level involves reviewers with a less direct investment in the paper.
Initial funding for this project is made possible by one of the several fees students pay each semester. Each student pays $5.00 each term for an "Instructionally Related Activities (IRA) fee." A proposal was submitted to ASI for a portion of these fees and the Division of Nursing was awarded $1400 by the IRA Advisory Board to initiate the on-line journal.
As a CSUDH nursing student you are invited to participate in the new On-Line Journal of Nursing Scholarship. Here is a list of the various positions open for participation in this new venture. If you find one you may be interested in, please contact Dr. Judith Chodil.
