CLAD
CERTIFICATE
|
DESCRIPTION OF THE CLAD CERTIFICATE |
OVERVIEW
Increasing
numbers of school districts are requiring CLAD
certification. While new teachers are obtaining this
certification as part of their teacher training, it has
become necessary for credentialed teachers to obtain the
CLAD as well. Rather than enroll in a teacher-training
program, it is possible for teachers to add on this
credential.
CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS
There are
several ways in which a CLAD can be obtained. Here at CSUDH,
it is possible to obtain a CLAD through course work.
1.
Required Course work: Total 12 units
MUL 520 - The Teaching of
English to Speakers of Other Languages (3)
MUL
525 - Bilingual-Multicultural Teaching Methods (3)
MUL
505 - Assessment of Second Language
Learners (3)
MUL
508 - Language Acquisition in an Urban Setting (3)
2.
Second Language Requirement:
At the time
you apply to the state for the CLAD certificate you will
need to demonstrate that you have satisfied this
requirement. In most cases it can be satisfied by
demonstrating that you completed 6 college units (i.e.,
4-year or community college) of the same language with a
grade of “C” or better. Contact the state regarding
alternative ways of satisfying this requirement.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I substitute one or more of these courses
with course work that I have taken elsewhere?
Unfortunately that is not possible. The state has approved
these four courses and no others. That is,
these four course numbers must appear on your CSUDH
transcript in order for you to obtain a CLAD certificate.
How long does it take to complete a CLAD?
The
majority of individuals attending our courses are currently
employed teachers, consequently classes meet once a week
from 4 P.M. to 6: 45 P.M. or from 7 P.M. to 9:45 P.M. Most
students enroll in two classes each semester, thereby taking
them two semesters to complete their CLAD course work. If
the second language requirement still needs to be satisfied,
then it could take longer.
What are the advantages of obtaining a CLAD
from CSUDH?
There are
basically two advantages. First, the subject matter is
covered in greater depth than other means. Often test
preparation classes successfully prepare individuals for an
examination, yet they lack the depth that one requires to be
truly knowledgeable. This is a personal decision which one
needs to make. There is a second advantage. By completing
all 4 CLAD classes, 12 units of college credit have been
earned. These 12 units can be applied towards an M.A.
degree. By taking 18 additional units (i.e., 6 more
classes) you can earn both a CLAD and an M.A. (Multicultural
Option). Over 90 % of our students pursue both degrees
simultaneously.
By when must I decide whether to pursue a
CLAD only or a combination CLAD and M.A.?
This
decision needs to be made before completing 9 units
of GED/ MUL course work. If not, then
the CLAD GED/MUL courses will not be able to count toward
the M.A. degree. Students who decide to pursue both the
CLAD and M.A. will need to attend Meeting #1 to take care of
necessary paperwork associated with the M.A. This must be
done by the middle of October for students who began their
CLAD classes during the fall semester or by mid May if they
began in the spring. Furthermore, students will need to
follow all instructions and complete all steps contained in
this handbook associated with the M.A. and CLAD combination
degree. Pay particular attention to the instructions in this
handbook, which are designated, for “Former CLAD
students.” Steps 1 to 4 will need to be completed
immediately, well before the deadline dates of November 1
(for Spring admission) or June 1 (for Fall admission).
How Can I obtain a BCLAD Certificate?
Credentialed teachers may obtain a BCLAD by (1) completing
the CLAD course work outlined above and (2) taking a series
of tests in the language and culture-specific domains. You
may contact (916) 928-0212 for specific testing TIMES and
locations.
TIME FRAME
You will
need to attend our first meeting only. The second meeting
is intended primarily for M.A. students.

FOUR
STEPS TO COMPLETING THE CLAD CERTIFICATE
|
STEP 1- APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY FOR ADMISSION
Pick up
application materials from one of the following
offices, depending upon the way in which you wish to be
admitted to the university. There are 2 ways you can apply:
1) Extension Program
This is a quick way to be
admitted because you do not have to submit your college
transcripts initially. Some first semester students elect
this route. Yet, students should be reminded that regularly
registered students have priority over extension students
when class space is limited. Also, taking courses through
the Extension program is slightly more expensive than taking
courses through the regular university. Finally, if
students decide to simultaneously pursue the M.A. and CLAD
later on, they will still be required to apply to the
regular university for admission and do so shortly after
beginning their first semester.
This is due to the fact that
students pursuing the M.A. and CLAD must be admitted to the
regular university by their second semester or they will not
be able to apply their previously earned course work to the
M.A. degree.
Location:
Extension Program- EE/1100
Hours: Monday to Thursday 8 am
to 6 pm
Friday 8 am to 5 pm
Saturday 8 am to 1 pm
(Call first to confirm hours.
Hours subject to change.)
Telephone: (310)
243-3741 or 243-2190
2) Regular University
Admission
Most students prefer to be
admitted through the university from the onset. It is less
expensive and priority is given to regularly registered
students when class space is limited. Also, one need not
apply twice for admission, first through Extension then
later through the university. However, the application
(and transcripts) needs to be submitted by the deadline
dates of June 1 for fall admission and November 1 for spring
admission.
Students pursuing only the CLAD
may complete all of their course work through the Extension
Program, the regular university, or a combination of the
two. However, students pursuing the M.A. and CLAD
combination must apply for regular admission to the
university by November 1 (if they begin their CLAD courses
in the fall) and June 1 (if they begin in the spring).

STEP 2- APPLY TO THE GRADUATE EDUCATION
DIVISION
Students
pursuing only the CLAD do not need to formally apply to the
GED (Graduate Education Division). However, students who
are thinking about pursuing an M.A. and CLAD Combination
would be wise to obtain a copy of an application at this
time. Applications may be picked up at the Student Services
Center located in SCC/Bldg. 5.

STEP 3- TAKE CLASSES
Take the
four required classes in any sequence.
If you have
not satisfied the second language requirement, you can do
this simultaneously with your GED course work. Here are
some possible ways to satisfy the requirement.
*Take 6 units of a second language at a community college.
*Contact Dr. Jose Cuervo in our
Spanish department at (310) 243-3325 or 243-3919
regarding summer session courses in Mexico.
* Take 6 units of Spanish at CSUDH.
STEP 4- APPLY FOR STATE CERTIFICATE.
After
completing all course work, complete the following below:
(1) Obtain
a copy of CSUDH transcripts showing all completed CLAD
course work.
(2) Provide
documentation that demonstrates that you have satisfied the
second language requirement. In most instances, this will
consist of a copy of transcripts that show 6 units of
college level course work in a foreign language.
(3) Obtain
a copy of the State of California “Application for
Credential Authorizing Public School Service” (Form 41-4),
also referred to as “the yellow form” from one of the
following locations: (1) your school district, or (2) the
College of Education Student Services Center.
Instructions on how to complete the form are attached to
it. If you have any questions on completing the form, you
can call the Credentials Office at (310) 243-3353 Mondays
through Thursday from 1: 30 P.M. to 5: 30 P.M. or the CCTC
at (916) 445-7254.
(4) After
you have completed the yellow form and gathered other
documents listed above, you may send them directly to the
state CCTC (California Commission on Teacher
Credentialing). No recommendation is required from CSUDH.
