CSUDH’s Political Science Club encourages South L.A. Students with L.A.’s Finest
On September 20, 2008, Our Political Science Department Vice President, Henry Fields participated in the 6th Annual African American and Latino Leadership Conference. This year’s event was held on the campus of the University of Southern California with an extensive and very impressive five hour leadership forum. Our local dignitaries included Sen. Maxine Waters, Sheriff Leroy Baca, the Rev. Cecil Murray, Dr. Manuel Tigerino, L. A. City Councilman Bernard Parks, Supervisor Yvonne Burke, and hosted by 92.3FM’s Josepha Salinas to name a few. This conference was held in the Town and Gown Hall to hundreds of parents and students from the community. The focus of the conference was unity and empowerment for all people. Facilitators organized peer groups that shared ideas on topics such as education, economics, immigration and communication. These groups then searched for reasonable solutions to the topics that they have selected.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters made a brief but passionate speech that focused on student achievement. “Young people…I want you in school…do you hear me?” She then praised Sheriff Leroy Baca for his commitment to community service. After her speech, she made a quick exit. “I’m headed back to Washington tonight to work on this economic crisis.” Sheriff Baca gave an inspirational speech on leadership saying ”Making friends is a big part of solving problems.” Later, there was an amazing presentation on Human Rights that can also be seen at youthforhumanrights.org.
There was also an appearance from the urban superhero Dangerman. The DangerMan Education Foundation Inc., is a not-for-profit corporation working to improve children's education in urban and low income communities while enhancing their self-esteem for the future, thus preparing them for the demands of the 21st Century. The Urban Superhero ,DangerMan promotes safety and literacy while mentoring to children on the dangers of not being able to read and benefit from a good education.
