REMINDER FROM THE ISSO

International Student Medical Insurance -- All international students attending CSU Dominguez Hills must have a CSUDH international medical insurance policy issued by the Somerton Student Insurance Services.  The annual 12-month coverage for August 2000 through August 2001, premium cost is $490 ($41 per month). The CSUDH international student medical insurance is a comprehensive benefit plan designed to protect you against unforeseen medical expenses while studying in the USA. Besides coverage due to injury or sickness and hospitalization expenses it includes medical evacuation country or repatriation to your home country of citizenship.

International students who are not covered by this mandatory health insurance policy will automatically have an international "hold" placed on their touchtone registration access mailer by the ISSO until evidence of health insurance is on record in the ISSO filing system (CSU Executive Order #622).

INS POLICIES & PROCEDURES

1. TRAVELING OUTSIDE OF THE USA -- All F-1 visa students cannot travel outside the USA, without the DSO signature on page 4, of their current I-20.  Your DSO signature is good for traveling up to six (6) months without a new travel validation.  Make sure you request this travel endorsement up to six (6) weeks in advance of your trip.  Without a travel validation you may have difficulty reentering the USA and get a $70 INS fine.  Remember that you need to have your I-20 Form validated before traveling to Mexico or Canada.  This process takes minutes once you make an appointment with your ISA in the ISSO (telephone (310) 243-2215).

2. ON-CAMPUS JOBS -- Students with an F-1 visa may work on-campus in any job for a maximum of 20 hours per week or less.  All students seeking on-campus employment should read the CSUDH "Jobtaker" bulletin listed as job opportunities on the website at http://www.csudh.edu/fin_aid/.

Once a student is offered an on-campus job they must turn in a copy of their I-20 Form, a SPAR Form and I-9 Form in the University's Human Resources Office located in the 5th floor of the library (aka: ERC) room B-516.  Your International Student Advisor (ISA) will eventually need to sign these forms. Please remember that international students do not qualify for “work study” positions.

3. CURRICULAR WORK PERMIT FOR OFF CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT -- Curricular Practical training off-campus work permit (prior to your graduation) may be available to you. Curricular training is an off-campus work permit for up to twenty (20) hours per week or less in a job related to your major/minor. Undergraduate students who have completed the past two (2) consecutive semesters enrolled full-time at CSUDH are eligible to apply. Graduates can apply for curricular training their first semester at CSUDH. Both graduate and undergraduate students must have a job offer in writing and apply through the International Student Services Office (ISSO).

The last day to apply for an off-campus 20 hour per week curricular permit this fall with the ISSO is 3 p.m., Thursday, September 14th.  You must bring your I-20 Form with you for processing this work permit.

4. POST PRACTICAL TRAINING WORK PERMIT -- A forty (40) hour per week work permit (after you graduate) for 12 months. This period allows an international student who graduates an opportunity to work in a job related to their field of study full-time both on-or-off campus.  One does not need a job offer in order to receive a post practical training work permit.

Students who graduate fall 2000, on December 19th, must apply for their Post Practical Training work permit with the CSUDH ISSO. The filing period for post practical training is from Monday, October 2nd through, Monday, February 20, 1997 by 3 p.m.

Your exit interview allows the international Student Advisor (ISA) to process your INS forms around your career goals and objectives.

JOB SEARCH WORKSHOP

On Tuesday, October 10th, from 4 to 5 p.m., attend a workshop on your employment options.  The Student Development Office and ISSO staff will review with you how to find an on campus job and how to file for INS curricular practical training and post practical training work permits.  The Job Search Workshop for international students will be held in the Small College Complex room E-153.
