Financial Information

As a public university, CSUDH is able to provide students with a quality education at a reasonable cost at a US national average price.  For an international student enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program, the tuition and fees are about $12,000 a year ($6,000 per semester) for both undergraduates and graduates.  The estimated annual expenses total $30,000 a year for undergraduate and graduate students (CSU estimated tuition & fees subject to increases without notice).  The expenses include tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and meals, CSU mandatory health (medical) insurance, transportation and other personal expenses for 12 months.  All CSU international students must pay for a specific health insurance policy as defined in CSU Executive Order 622.  This $30,000 yearly estimated budget will be the same at all 23 CSU campuses.

There are no scholarships or financial aid available at the CSU to international students.  International students might work on-campus for 20 hours a week during the semester and 40 hours a week in the summer.  A rule of economics is if you do not have the necessary money do not apply.

The US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) requires that all international students provide evidence of adequate funds to meet the financial obligations of enrollment at a U.S. university.  The combined U.S. dollar amount from your sponsor(s) must equal or exceed the estimated annual student expenses totaling $30,000 per year.  Bank verification of funds must not be older than six months.

Obtaining The F-1 Student Visa

International (foreign) applicants must apply and be admitted into a CSUDH academic program before receiving a USCIS SEVIS form I-20.  Once they are admitted officially into their major with all the necessary documents required by the US government the ISSO will issue a form I-20 and mail it to the student or their family in the USA (ISSO will normally issued the form I-20 the same day the student is officially admitted).  The US government requires that a $200 non-refundable SEVIS registration fee be paid on-line by the applicant or family once they receive their form I-20.  After receiving a form I-20 the student must make an appointment to go to the nearest American Embassy to their home and ask for an F-1 student visa stamp on their passport to visit the USA and study.  The American Embassy examiner will ask the F-1 student visa  applicant what compels them to return home after they earn their degree and to prove that they have adequate financial support to meet their expenses without working (minimum of $30,000 per year).  On-line programs do not qualify for a form I-20.  CSUDH does not issue the J-1 visa to students.  For more information on the F-1 student visa read http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.

Campus Housing

The university provides students with fully furnished housing facilities, with two computer labs, an indoor exercise room, a beach-volleyball court, basketball courts and other recreational facilities.  The housing office has 24-hour live-in staff to help students.  It also provides students with free shuttle bus service to local supermarkets.  All of these start at about $550 a month (two people per bedroom).  However, there are always more students applying for housing than the university can accommodate (only 460 students can live on-campus out-of 12,000).  Therefore, applicants who are interested in campus housing are encouraged to contact the university housing office and apply as soon as possible with the required $30 deposit.

The International Student Services Office (ISSO)

The CSUDH ISSO is an integral part of the US government homeland computer security system known as SEVIS.  The ISSO functions through the campus Coordinator - USCIS Designated School Official who is certified to issue the form I-20 to eligible international students while following the Code of Federal Regulations.  The ISSO must report all foreign student addresses, enrollment, health insurance, employment and travel in real time to SEVIS.  The ISSO assists international students sustain their F-1 student visa status.  All newly admitted international students must report to the ISSO and attend a special USCIS Orientation Program one week before classes begin (mandatory on-campus report date on the form I-20).  Only the ISSO can issue work permits and travel validations to CSUDH foreign F-1 visa student body.  It also administers letters for banking, US social security cards and military deferment while temporarily visiting the USA to gain their education.        For more detailed information and pictures read the ISSO comprehensive web page at: www.csudh.edu/isso
