| Ban, Rebekah | "i've worked at the local library for five years and there's a big difference from when i went to it as a little girl. I'm sorry to say that quiet days at the library are gone. things are changing. The library no longer have just books, but computers as well. i've seen alot of people who come to the library for many different reason. Yes people are forgetting that the library nneds to be a quiet place because it is often the meeting place for study groups. often i have to remind people that other people need to study as well when someone is talking too loud. Another problem that is occuring often is people yelling into their cell phone. not only can i hear the whole conversation, but people just forget they are in a library. my advice to you is to tell the authory like the librarian to tell them to lower their voice. if you tell them yourself they might feel ofended, unlike you like confrontations, then feel free to tell them yourself. | Batiste, Kristian | "What people fail to realize is, above all they are still human. Who wouldn't react like that. They reacted without thinking first, but who honestly can blame them." Message No. 1718. Kristian, I think you've raised an important issue. Rights like answerability in a given forum should go with reponsibilities like respect. We've defined our naked space that way. But sports arenas lack that balance. I wonder where the dominant discourse is when beer throwing seems to be acceptable at least amongst a number of fans. | ||
| Birch, Amanda K. | "Jeanne, I have learned a lot in your class this semester and I thank you. The most important thing that I have learned is to respect others with different perspectives, especially republicans. I am glad that I took your class during the elections because instead of loathing the new president I am trying to respect and have faith in him. . . . . Also I thank you for discussing current events in your lectures and online. I am a full time student and work full time. I am usually too busy to stop and read the newspaper and see what is going on in the world. . . . You had asked me to send you a picture of my project on respect for your online gallery. Somthing is wrong with my camera so I am unableto send it. I will try to send it to you next week. I really enjoyed the gallery as well. There were some very intresting and educational projects. I am sure everyone who visited the gallery loved it. Thank you for your hard work. Erin Sanchez" Message No.2353. | Garcia, Veronica | "Through my job, however, I have the opportunity to use governance and public discourse. I work for the Federal Public Defender Office in Los Angeles. I am fortunate to be a part of a group of attorneys and staff who are passionate about the work they do. I take pride in helping indigent clients, their families and the general public. Our office also has a capital habeas unit, so we are really busy. Everyday is a new battle for us to fight the government. Although our office does not win many cases, – the government has an unlimited amount of resources and budget compared to our office – we fight till the end. We are the underdogs, but we don’t mind. . . . I often share what I’ve learned in class (your lectures, dear habermas and transform) with my friends and fellow coworkers. They are impressed with the issues that are brought up and by your method of teaching. Your teaching style is so refreshing. I have never had a professor who treated her students as an equal and inspired us to think "outside the box." From the first day of class, I knew the class would be interesting and non-traditional. Unlike some of my other classmates, I was not concerned or skeptic about what I would learn in your class. . . . I learned the importance of having and respecting the naked space. The energy in the room is much different than having the chairs in a row. The simple fact of being able to face each other and listen to one another is awesome. I learned not only to listen in good faith, but to do my best to understand what others have to say even though I may not agree with them. I learned that I have the right to question, inquire, and assess what is going on around me – at school, work, and society – and not be afraid to speak up and let my views be known. I learned to express my anger and frustration without having to be disrespectful. Mostly I’ve learned that we as a class can start off one way and end in a completely different way; a much better way. Based on the class discussions and transform discourse, I’ve noticed that our thinking, awareness and focus on subjects grew throughout the semester. . . . Jeanne, I have much respect and admiration for my fellow classmates and especially for you and Pat. You have been a great source of information. My only regret is that I was unable to participate as much as I would’ve liked to due to the stressful events in my life. It is uplifting, however, to know that there are professors like you (perhaps not many, but I’m hopeful) who care about people and the world we live in. Jeanne, you claim you don’t have the energy to keep up, but boy, you certainly have more energy than others I’ve known that are half your age! . . . Thank you and Pat for your hard work and for inspiring us to make a difference." Veronica Garcia. habermas.org Veronica, I'm glad the format of the class met your needs. You must keep up with your school work. You are articulate and thoughtful; you should hang in and get your degree so that you can go further for you and your daughter. jeanne | ||
| Gardner, Tamrin Monique | "In light of all the N.B.A drama going on I can't help but wonder if our expectations of athletes and stars in general are way to high. It seems as though we don't want these individuals to be human. Honestly speaking if someone threw beer all over me my first reaction would probably be to swing on them.Don't get me wrong I know it was unfair for the children at the game to be subjected to this, but why are the fans not getting blamed for these actions as well. After all the players didn't start this they just reacted to it. I think we're expecting to much from these individuals they are regular people just like us they just make alot more money, we need to stop looking for someone else to be role models for our children and start do the job ourselves." Message No.1567 I agree. That's our accountability to one another and to the community of which we are an integral, if sometimes alienated, part. | ||

| Gray, Carolyn | Need evidence of learning. F until I hear from you. jeanne "this email is on behalf of my classmates who were in your sociology 367, sociology 395 Carolyn Gray sociology 367, and Anita Reese sociology 395 they have no access to the interent. Therefore i am sending this email on their behalf. These two students were also on the project we did for the exhibit on elder abuse" Lori Dale. habermas.org Lori, thank you for letting me know about the elder abuse study. We moved so quickly at the exhibit that it never occurred to any of us that I didn't have a full list of the participants. I'll fix that (tomorrow) on 395 a nd 367. But Carolyn Gray and Anita Reese do have access to the internet during regular semesters, at least in the lab, and certainly through me and Pat in our offices. They need to see that they provide an evidence of learning. I'm sure you all understand that evidence of learning is essential to my being able to give grades, as is the internet. How did they follow Dear Habermas and tranform_dom??? Enjoy the holidays. jeanne | ||
| Green, Deiandra I | Have material. Will locate and put up. jeanne "Jeanne it was such a joy to be in all 4 of your classes I've learned so much.I've learned how to fight for what I believe in.I went directly to the parking office with more concern of over crowding in all the lots on campus.I wanted to know why we have to either buy a parking permit are pay $2.50 for a daily pass when the home depot events take up most of our parking.I also needed to know why the students are paying the same amount as the home depot center. The home depot center charges $10.00 for parking put CSUDH only receive $2.50 why is that. The people in the parking office had no answer ability Jeanne I will keep trying for some answers. DeiAndra, were you part of the Parking Project. I was not aware of that. I'll check my records. "Jeanne no I was not part of the parking project but I'm too am concern about the lack of answer ability that CSUDH have when the students ask about parking.Jeanne doing the election I was pro pop66 I couldn't understand why it didn't pass and I look to the TV and understand that our governer lied about pop66 he misrepresented the pop66 he made a lot of people educated and uneducated people for the why he wanted them to for political gain.I couldn't understand why people could not see through the lies. This pop was only to amend 3 strikes so that it would be for violent offenders and not petty offenders and it was also going to allow that state to go over case by case to let out those offenders that have comitted petty crimes and have served enough time for the crime they comitted. People are not aware that it takes 1 million dollars a year to house a 3 striker and at the rate we are going in 10 years over 2/3 of the prison popualtion will be 3 striker and are taxes will go up because the will need more prison because they are already crowded. My project was on respect and education sex is not the only thing that people are not educating there self on. People are failing to educated and ask question on life itself. This is my learning record for SOC 367. "Deiandra Green Message No.2424. Good explanations, Deiandra. I'm glad that I asked you to do this, because I had no idea of this part of your learning. You gotta remember the teacher doesn't know what you've learned unless you tell her. You have also given me a greater understanding of why you chose the project on sexual education. The need to educate ourselves on the many aspects of the life we live. Good point. jeanne | ||
| Hawley, Angelique Micheline | Parking Project "-Wow! another case of you must wait until things are straight for me!" Angelique Hawley. Message No. 2190. I think you've made agood point, Angelique. There seems to be a problem of staff complaining that they are overworked and so cannot meet demands. A little illocurionary discourse might help there if this isn't your fifth encounter, as it was for Darcy. jeanne "Grades Not yet Posted: Keep checking my grades were not there either and I noticed our last names were after the letter "F" so it will be posted soon I hope. . . . To my surprise and confirmity I learned your class was like no other. I learned about discussion, positions ( right and left wing), I learned that as people we may take a stand for something but it doesn't necessarily mean we are right/ wrong and the person that we oppose is our enemy. It is okay to agree to disagree and still go on with life. Naked Space will alway be a part of my life. . . . Discussions are most important because information on different point of views and feelings are laid on the table giving everyone involved the chance to vibe or feed off of the ideas/ solutions. Sharing information in the bank , church, supermarket and please don't forget the hair salon. People have a lot to say but will often hold back due to feeling uncomfortable or feeling as though they are not intelliegent enough to address certian issues. . . . Transparency " May I see through you? I learned this goes both ways either information is made available or or not (Stonewalled/blackwalled). I learned in order to even get someone close to being transparent I must put them in a position of comfort in knowing that the information they share is okay to be dicussed. Prime example the city council member of Carson who shared the information with me about the hotel. . . . I will miss the discussions I had with Ben, Tara, Felecia and Wilmer, Jessica, Brenda. . . .I wish everyone the best and I look forward to seeing you all after I have this little boy. . . . Angelique Hawley. Message No. 2421. Angelique, I'm so glad you wrote. And maybe you've explained what happened with toroweb. It may be adding grades alphabetically and just going very slowly. What a horror. Shades of magic numbers. Once you have your little boy, all of us will still be there on transform_dom, so you won't have to miss us. Just join right in our discussions. By the way, you did great explanations of the concepts. Remind me to pull them out for new students to learn. love and peace. jeanne | ||

| James, Brenda Joyce | "[A firend] told me about a conversation she had with an ex-cop about Park's reign as police chief. Seems he was very strict and had no tolerance for foolishness. He was known to follow up on every complaint about his officers, which did not sit well for certain officers. I think that is good trait for someone in leadership. I never met him personally, but I like what I have seen and heard about him. Since this current news, I like to hear how people feel about him and his desire to run for mayor." Message # 794 Good idea to start us thinking about future elections. Bear in mind Stephanie's emphasis on the importance of being involved past just voting. And I look the specificity of detail you gave about what you like about Parks, Brenda. " "Hey Jeanne. . . was looking through learning records and thought i'd help... Brenda Joyce James was with us doing the parking project and in soc 367 in the "Felicia,Will, and Jessica" corner. Have a great Holiday. Thanks for a great sememster. Jessica L. | Jennings, Shaneah LaDrena | "Coming into both of my classes (Soc 595 and Soc 367) I began with hesitation. Many times I found myself being somewhat lost not knowing what was really being talked about, even after reading the articles. Within the first month, things began to fall into place. I loved the fact that I had two classes with you back to back. A lot of the times what was discussed in Soc 595 was carried over into Soc. 367. Here I was able to experience many people's thoughts and opinions about various issues (from our Community, to the elections, to how we should manage our time). This form of dominant, illocutionary, and governance discourse made me for once in my college experience "think outside of the box". As a graduate student, so many times we have been given articles to discuss, so that we can present them to our classes. Once we have presented them, we are able to hear our peers opinions, but in the end, the final say and opinion would always find a way back to our original thought. I have never really taken into consideration another person's opinion as I did in these classes. . . . I also love how the naked space exhibit tied the class together. It was a perfect way to end our classes. It gave us as students a chance to use this exhibit not only as a governance discourse, but it also gave us an open forum to have many issues and points brought out. Doing my project on Women being abused (the effects it has on children) and Women being abused in prisons, gave me the oppurtunity to address my concerns without having to beat anyone over the head with it, or say a word. . . .Thanks! . . .I've enjoyed these classes!! . . . P.S. My favorite line from you that I now incorporate into my life "There is no 1 truth or perspective." Message No. 2095. Thank you, Shaneah, your explanation about needing about a month to catch on is very helpful. You see, for me, this IS the box. So it's hard to estimate how fast I can go. I also love that you really listened more to others this semester, and I like your description of interpassivity "without having to beat anyone over the head with it, or say a word." i know interpassivity is important, but you reminded me in a way I won't forget. And I'm proud of your favorite line. Hold on to it. jeanne | ||

| Juarez, Yvette | active on transform_dom; Where did you read this at? message #487; good call for check on resources; "I think that these shows can help a person that is really bad I mean needs alot of work and they cant afford it for health reasons only. but if you are trying to look beautiful then why go throught all this really I mean I thought about it I put my name on Extreme Makeover not so long ago and I was accepted to be on the show trust me I was happy as hell I had to loose 50lbs before getting on the show and everything that I wanted would be done to me.. I'm telling you that I never went throught it because I was scatred of the mere fact that i wasnt going to be the person that I was deep down inside you know what Imean I want to be me and I want somone to love me for me not for what I look like but I guess in this messed socitey all mean want is a nice good looking skinny girl whatever." Message 1573 Good gut-level response, Yvette. In theory, I would you mind you of illocutionary discourse, of the importance of getting to know yourself, and not let that self be silenced. Would you like to be a swan? "Jeanne the stimulus for writting this was like a spark that inginte me to write something. I have never had a boyfriend in my life I went to school all my life because I was thought you need to do for yourself and not depend on a man. When I was in high school I was involved in everything cheer, dance and choir I was fit and I had guys wanting to date me but I never wanted to because school and my organzations were very important to me... Well after high school I didnt keep in shape and I started not eating healthy this lead to me gaining weight.. Here is what caused me I tend to be everyone' s friend but never girlfriend because of the way that I look.. Yes granted society has and plays a role into what women are supposed to look like but hello we all cant be models. So this guys told me that that fat girls are nice and sweeet and cute but they will never hace boyfriends because of there weight.. So this is why I wrote the poem and I have more.. I have never been called fat or names but never have I had someone tell me that I'm pretty or go out with me. Yet I'm very smart have a great job and my own home I cant be pretty enought for a man out there... I dont know what to think at time s but I just watned to write this and vent out I guess its due to finals and stress. Thank you so much for listening to me and please let me know what my grades were in both of your calsses." Yvette. Message No. 2278. Yvette, read this over in a quiet moment, and hear yourself. You participated in something here that mattered to you again. And this community let you know that it mattered. You are pretty. And there are guys out there who can see that. They may not be in the local single bars, but they will be poetry readings, in workshops that bring governance discourse to the people, in some of your classes, eventually. And long before they become boyfriends, they'll be just friends. Remember the importance of illocutionary understanding and of communities that engage in such discourse. We'll have some poetry readings this Spring. You can help organize them. love and peace, jeanne | ||

| Mansour, Sawsan | good sharing of info on elections and issues; relatively little written comment; he said "Well, you know... if someone has committed two prior violent and serious felonies, chances are that he/she is not going to be rehabilitated and even though their third strike may not be considered violent at the time, they will probably commit another violent crime somewhere down the road." message # 508: so I guess I got my substantive comment, par excellence - maybe by the time issues like this come up again, you'll have him thinking more accurately and recognizing his unstated assumptions; "Jeanne, I'm unclear about what it says by name as far as the learning record for soc 370. it says A while Waiting for parking evidence? | McDonald, Aaron | Nile virus material; knowledgeable concern over Black vote; "Jeanne: I went to the library today to study for my last final; I had never experienced any excess noise there before, but while I sat and tried to do some last minute reading and transcribing finals' notes two young ladies came in and sat at the table next to where I was sitting. First the computer they were setting up cut into the almost quiet of the library. Second, the "cell-phone" one of them was carrying helped to finish breaking the silence with a loud chiming noise. After about 30 seconds of this disrespectful presentation, I asked them if they would be so kind as to bring the noise down to a low whisper? I got no response, so I decited to leave. As I was leaving, I stopped at the service desk to report the incident, and as I stood talking to the assistant at the desk, these two "young ladies" left. The assistant replied that she did know of a procedure that would cover the incident I just experienced." Aaron McDonald, Message No. | ||

| Miller, Jason Maxwell | responsive to no more essays; active with good commentary on transform_dom; excellent class participation when present; I would also like to express my happiness with regards to the way that my friends, family, co-workers and just about everyone else in the "HOOD" has responded to this election ---of all elections. message #483; Although I believe that this election has been a extroadinary civic experience for the masses, I do think that it has exposed America as two different countries; seperated by black and white, rich and poor. I don't believe the rigid divisions existed until the Clinton administration--and the subsequent scandalous attacks aimed at him from the right." "Your theory of oppression and dominance intersecting throughout many different way by not just relating to Republicans versus Democrats, blacks versus whites, rich versus poor was clearly illustrated when the revolation came to light that the religious RIGHT were conspiering (spelling?) to deny a MODERATE REPUBLICAN, Sen. Arlen Specter from his just right to chair the Senate Judiciary Commitee, because he preffered a PRO-CHOICE nominee. Have we not, as Americans, seen what happens when religious convictions interfere with sound, fair judgements? The Middle-East is constantly strife with war and famine, primarily over God and Country. Our Free Speech, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Religion are under attack from ultra-conservatives. We must not let them dictate their agenda to us, Republicans and Democrats alike must wake up and stand up to this giant red-faced bully." Jason, I agree. That is an illustrarion that we are not as divided as we think. But rewrite it now and tone it down so you won't alienate friends and neighbors who haven't thought that out yet. The most effective thing you do is encourage peopel to awareness by talking about what you understand, not by scaring them with your rhetoric. "I took the Bogardus Scale survey, I came to a conclusion that I have absolutely no problem (actually I would enjoy) living and socializing with immigrants. I always have been eager to soak up the culture of other peoples. However, Jeannie, I must admit, I am not so eager to live next to the homeless. . . . The face of homeless people has changed for me. Instead of streets filled with single mothers and babies, many of the homeless are schizophrenic mental patients. The constant badgering and wierd run-ins with them makes me want to live far away from the homeless -- not closer." Message No. 1717. Jason, this tells us something about dominant discourse and the homeless. "homeless" has come to mean just not working, or not trying hard enough, and probably on drugs. We have pushed out of awareness what Reagan did when he closed the mental hospitals. Shon Williams, a graduate student in 595, is doing a project in the exhibit on the homeless. Make it a point to connect with that exhibit, and share ideas for change with us.
"The Republicans vowed to never give up power again (by hook or by crook). And here we are divided by the national version of the Southern strategy; divided of course by the party led by the "uniter"; message #486 good and tragic point Jason, but it needs more discussion. we need to talk about the Southern strategy; Karst on the social issues agenda is good on this;" Again, the Southern Strategy, let's get it into discourse. The Election, Respect, and Naked Space "The domestic agenda of Americans typically most inclined to vote Demoratic was either ignored or shoved aside for an ill-timed, incomplete developed arguement on GAY MARRIAGE. The gay left somehow hijacked the party, much to the elephants delight." Message 809 Jason, I answered youi at some length on transform_dom. I'd like everyone to reflect to me that they understand the argument I'm making about the dysfunctional result of blaming any fringe group. "I was curious at to the standards you hold your graduate classes to, so I read some of the learning charts. This Rudi guy (better known as Saten) must have been trying to stir the pot (so to speak) in your class. Because anybody with even a modicum level of intelligence would gain out of your lectures (even though your views are clearly to the left of the Pacific Ocean)that respect for those who disagree is what keeps humans from acting as primates. . . . I've been reading on -and -on about what everyone has learned in your course: now its my f*@*' turn (that was for you ): . . . Jeannie, when I first joined your class, I viewed the world as black and white, right and wrong. You taught me through your lectures on illocutionary discourse to learn what fears or goals the other side of the arguement has. While learning that, you may also learn that their fears and goals -- hopes and dreams, are not too much different than yours. Through illocutionary discourse we may transform dominant discourse and maintain RESPECT for one another's position in an argument---and in our world." Jason A. Miller. Message No. 2241. Good instinct, to check out my standards by reading learning records. Now, there you go again, assuming that someone that does not respond as you expect is Satan. Rarely are things that straightforward, Jason. But I love that you understood the transparency of this grading style and realized that by checking out what I accepted as evidence for the previously granted A in the course was right there for everyone to see. I hope you noticed how different all the records are. jeanne |

| Moody, Shannon Lynn | "I understand that California has some of the lowest fees for college but for some people these fees are still too much. I am single, I live on my own and I work part-time. I applied for financial aid and Cal grants, and I was denied by all of them. Unfortunitly they base their decision on my parent's tax returns because I am under 25 years of age. I have wrote many essays for scholarships even if it is only for $500, and still, nothing. I have already considered not attending this next semester because I can't afford to. I still owe the money borrowed for this semester and now it is time to pay for next semester. If Kristine started a petition at least students could that they are concerned about the increase and they want something to be done about it." Message # ??? This is the dilemma to which Habermas refers as a non-learning feedback system. The system goes merrily along assuming its rules work, and doesn't provide any place for those who are harmed to get their feedback to the rules correction system. Governance discourse is one way to provide that feedback. Petitions are another. "I have never met an instructor as educated as you are. I love that you put your intelligence to good use. You taught the class about honesty and told how it is straight up. I never really understood the elections and you helped me to choose who I wanted to vote for because of what I believe in. I love that everyone in the class got to speak their opinions and were heard, many classes don't allow you to do this but this is how you can learn from others. I have told everyone I know about you and your class. I had a lot of fun and I hope to take another class with you some time. Thanks Jeanne for opening my mind to think outside of the box." Message No. 2058 Thank you. I think you're right, Shannon, about the importance of everyone being given the opportunity to speak. Lots of time you're all silent, and I get to go on with impromptu lectures. But you all know that at any point you need to speak, the floor is yours. That serves our need for answerability. | ||

Excellent job, and I learned a lot from it, too. You were brave to under take it.Just wanted to remind you that I Celia Piz, worked on the Drunk Driving Project with Jenny Silva, and Alex Pineda. In our project we addressed the dangers in drunk driving, along with statistics on deaths, and accidents. We also included information on how families become victims too. We provided a hands on activity, where people remove pictures of wrecked cars, and underneath uncover a picture of a girl laid out in the pavement who was hurt do to drunk driving. This points out how even if one tries to remove the wreck, what is done can never be undone. There are so many innocent lives that are taken do to drunk driving. We also addressed the laws that come into play when drinking under the influence. In addition, we provided copies of Alcohol free drink recipes, tips on how to approach friends who have been drinking, and tips for children who find themselves in a vehicle with someone who has been drinking. I really enjoyed putting this project together. I hope it helped people become more aware of the dangers in drunk driving. . . . Through my experience in your classes I learned that in order to transform our society, one has to bring people to conscious awareness of issues that bother us in our community, share the harms of these issues, express our ideas and concerns through actions and words. Through your courses we had the opportunity to do this through collaborate learning. Transform_dom made this easier. Thanks for this opportunity it was a great experience." Message No. 2062. I am very pleased that you managed to work together and do such a great job on the project. I know that by taking action and speaking out on what i believe, i can make a differnce. I love the way you teach because you don't go around the truth and sugar coat it. You let us know what the truth is whether we like it or not. That makes it more interesting for me. . . In your classes i learned that the females have the right to have their own voices. Through out many years I feel that females don't get to voice out their opinion, but you are one of the few that do. For me it makes me feel like no matter how old you are and what you have been through as a female you should always say what you belive in and no person as the right to bring you down. You are a true inspiration to every female in the world. You don't give up on what you think." Thanks for the link. jeanne Maria, thank you for having the faith in naked space to bring Alana in. I look forward to working on our exchange on the cognitive linking of divorce to the study that Jessica did with young people who had experienced divorce. "darcy, i worked for an elementary school as an office assistant for 3 years and there were numerous complaints about double parking before and after school. school police was called frequently and could not do anything because that was out of their jurisdiction and the inglewood police department took too long. To make a long story short it was chaos all the time . However, we should be aware that It has been an ongoing issue that is not new to any school i dare say anywhere in the world. We as humans naturally pick the easiest way out even if it means inconsiderately blocking someone else's way by double parking. i have a few suggestions that you may be able to bring up to your principal in order to solve this problem. I think that first off parents need to be fully aware that IT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM in your community. They need to be fully aware and conscious of the negative consequences that it brings such as car accidents, road rage, and especially an unharmonious environment. . . . this is the way i envision it: You can suggest a route that will allow cars to come in one street and out the other via the front of the school..... so that the children do not have to cross any streets. . . . there could be a group of people escorting the kids out of the cars at the sidewalk so that the parents dont have to worry about staying parked too long and waiting for their kids to actually enter the school gates and stopping traffic....... this also ensures supervision outside of the school for those children who walk to school. . . . im not sure if explaining myself crearly but that is the general idea... i would love to get feed back from you to know what you think about that...... and yes it takes a dedicated team of volunteers but believe me when i say that it is worth the effort to ensure the safety of ourselves and our children...." | Smith, Kristie J | have record from visits, but not substantive; "Hello Jeanne, Thanks for getting back to me. The project that I did was on respect. Its was the one with the children on it. What we were trying promote with our project is that if you teach children respect at an early age they will more than likely grow up to be respectable adults. all of the problems in our society stem form a lack of training. Some people are not taught as children the skills that they need to help them the rest of there lives. I learned many things in this course, but the most important thing that I learned is that people need to get involved. Every single day we here and see people complaining abut social issues but the majority of them are not getting involved because they figure they will not be heard. You showed me that are few voices can make a difference, if they are serious about that particular issue. I also learned that you have to get to the core of the problem we need to investigate and identify the underlying issue, them maybe that will help us out. The majority of my messages I sent directly to you but the messages that I posted on transform dom are # 166, 205,672,675,822-824,1306,1857. I hope this helps because I am really concerned. | Summers, Shirley A | Thank you for stopping by the office to talk; now I have face and name together; "The core of academic integrity should flow two directions from the professors to the students and from the students to the professor. The structure of your class is very different from any other than I have attended and it's very clear. There is no cheating either you participate and demonstrate what you have learned or you don't receive your "A". Simple and clear although in many ways more difficult than a simple test. We are taught to take tests and write essays, not to examine an issue, learn the theory behind it, incorporate into our lives and perhaps promote social change." Message # 793; I think this is a good point to mke, the flowing of academic integrity, for our exhibit. Maybe we should do something on how testing distorts that integrity. Alfie Kohn for reference. "Our project consisted of three parts. A poster on the principles of Academic Integrity for Faculty, the building blocks of Academic Integrity and the definition of "cheating" a poster and 30 reports from a 4th grade class. . . . The project was on transforming the dominant discourse that academic integrity is the sole responsibility of the student and all that it entails is plagiarism. Although students have a responsibility to uphold their end of Academic Integrity, so does the faculty. We feel the Faculty at any school has the responsibility to provide an environment and teaching style that promotes learning. Trust and mutual respect in the teacher-student relationship should be paramount. Reading a lecture three weeks in a row and then giving the student a test in not teaching. . . . The building blocks are an example of how faculty and student work together to achieve goals. However, when a block is missing, disregarded or taken out the whole building will collapse. It is important to keep lines of communication open between students and faculty. . . . A class of 4th graders were asked for their thoughts on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism. The original question presented to them was, "What do you think plagiarism is?" They were not given any information, they were just asked to answer to the best of their knowledge. Some students did not know what that word meant, but most students answered the question by saying it was something bad, cheating, copying someone else, and some even said that people who plagiarized could go to jail. After the papers were collected the teacher explained the definition of plagiarism and held a small discussion. This was an interested project because we learned that Academic Integrity starts in Elementary. . . . We also passed out a flyer that contained about 40 quotations on respect. . . . Overall, your classes were a great experience; we have learned that our voices need to be heard in order for us to transform our society. We need to address our concerns and make people aware of issues. We must speak out and demand answers to problems that are disregarded. "Actions speak louder than words". Transform_dom was a great experience. . . . Thanks!" Message No. 2045. This is a wonderful report of your project. And I'm delighted that you managed to cooperate across all four classes. I would like to have you share the materials you used, and your poster (a picture, at least, please) so that we could replicate your experiment at several schools, including CSUDH next semester. I'd also like to suggest some cognitive connections to the three substantive classes you took part in: Agencies: integrity is usually demanded of the client, with a violation of that integrity called fraud, like welfare fraud. But your experiment emphasizes that professional integrity demands the same ethics and honesty of agency workers as of the client. Law: Integrity in this area might suggest that the law or regulations or rules should not be written with solely the professional's perspective in mind, but should attempt some illocutionary understanding of the client. Women and Poverty: The whole matter of integrity ceases to be considered when we who have successfully managed a traditional role in this society assume that we can then superimpose our own perspective on those who have somehow been damaged by the system. | ||
| Swint, Sheree Michele | know the name, but can;t place the face; I wrote a letter to the principal also with no response. Two weeks later a little girl was hit in the cross walk. Only then did they put school security out there to direct traffic. message #483 good sharing of narrative details to support arguments; I have a cousin that moved out of state to avoid gangs that moved into his neighborhood, which could have eventually caused him to get his 3rd strike. The other two strikes came from incidents in which he had to use self defense to save his own life. The bottom line is that the law needs to be used for what it was created for. It's just not fair as it stands now. message #512 again, good sharing of narrative details; " "It seems that school has become a institution of business instead of education. We as students SHOULD be able to have a say so as to who get to park in our lots since we are the ones paying a parking fee. If the HDC new it was making an arena that holds about 20,000 people there shoud have been the same amount of spaces available for parking at the HDC. . . . Just like there was a rally for the budget cuts and class cuts this summer, maybe there should be a rally regarding the parking issues. A big one. We need to make some noise and be heard. We do exist, otherwise there would be no CSUDH. Without us they have nothing and they need to understand that. What if no one bought parking passes at the beginning of next semester until we get some answers. I know that will be very difficult to do, being there is nowhere else to park. We just simply need to take a stand on this whole HDC thing. I'm down for a protest. . . . Fight the power!" Our project should be exposed to every one in the campus and maybe this way we could get an answer and a solution next year it will be the same thing again and with more students coming in each year we will have even more problems with the parking. well hopefully something is done." In addition, the course has helped me enjoy communicating online andreduce my anixety level." "Lori, these are good conclusionary statements about what you have learned, but they fail to give me specific examples of your learning. Read the learning records for examples. As I continue, I will probably find some specific examples you have posted on transform_dom, but you could help by eeking me on where they are. jeanne. "Being a part of your class was a pleasant experience for me even though your style of teaching was different from the norms. However, I think that you have helped me realize the importance of Dominant Discourse. The class was great and being apart of the exhibit was very educational, informative and creative. (These are conclusionsary, Lori.) Some of my favorite pieces in the exhibit were: The Balance of Life ( the best piece in the exhibit, simple but very creative), I Am Somebody - this piece focused on acceptance, goals, determination, poverty, and stuggles), Choose sides - this piece focused on racism or unity as you choose. Got Parking? (I especially like how they diplayed a parking structre overcrowded) (good speificity) , Stereotypes, Domestic Violence, and Are You A Swan?. . . . Overall the exhibit was constructed very well and we have Professor Curran, Pat and all the students that helped to thank. Great Work, Guys". This is more of what I was looking for, Lori. Which project did you work with? What was your specific interest? jeanne "Hi Marcy, My name is Lori Thomas and I am enrolled in SOC 367.I would like to join your group because I can totally related to almost everything that is listed in your email. Another concern that I have is professors who do a poor job at teaching and keeping their class organized and under control. I have taken several courses with professor who didn't know what they were doing. As a result, the class organization and motivation declined as the semester went on and in the end we didn't learned much but received a decent grade. Please email me with you opinion and all the details about the project. Thanks Lori 367. . . Hya Lori, this is Nancy thanks for sharing your situation! I myself have had professors or classes like those you speak of, in where "yeah i received a decent grade, but what exactly did i learn?" Scary and sad! We will definitely use your example in this project as well, so now lets get to the logistics of the project. Marcy and Iand anyone else interested in this project, (like Paul and yourself) need to figure that part out. We were thinking of doing some kind of "pop- up" poster (kinda like a pop-up card) with all the problems and/or scenarios we have faced here at Dominguez. Any other ideas please peeps let us know. By the way Marcy and I only have Jeanne for Moot Court, so we are always there, and will be there tomorow at 1pm. Thanx for the input! . . . Nancy Lopez, Moot Court. . . . Hello Nancy, Sorry for not repsonding sooner. As of today I am still working on creating a poster board that displays a professor in front of an empty classroom looking confused because the classroom is empty. (I am still looking on the web for some pictures but if I am unsuccessful I will draw it. ) Then I am going to have several 3x5 yellow pieces of paper around his head with have different headings as to why the classroom is empty. (e.g. unprepared lectues, no structure, lack of motivation, confused, little experience, don't care). In addition I have been speaking to many of my classmates about there feelings about the topic. Please let me know if I need to add or delete something. . . . Do you think it would be a good idea to title the poster "ARE YOU AWARE OF THE ISSUES THAT CONCERN US?". . . My poster board is going to be red with yellow writing. I have already confirmed with Jeanne my project idea during 11/18 class meeting. I will submit the final draft on Monday 11/29.. . . | Trowel, Denita M | "What I have learned section: I have learned about the importance of getting more involved with issues that concern me and the people around me(e.g. elections). Be more proactive and investigate. SOC 367 has provided me with the neccessary resources and links to help me investigate issue that have been discussed in class. In addition, the course has helped me enjoy communicating online and reduce my anixety level." Good start for the learning report, Denita. As you prepare your project and participate at the exhibit, we'll add more detail. "Prior to entered SOC 367 I was under the impression that I was enrolling in a class that focused heavily on taking notes, test, and listening to an instructor's lecture. However, to my surprise your classroom was the exact opposite. I especially like the seating arrangements ( naked space) because it felt like I was apart if a group discussion rather than the traditional classroom settings. Your lectures were very informative, especially during the elections, and you allowed everyone in the class to engage and voice there concerns and issue. As the semester progressed I eventually was able to really grasp the concept of Dominant Discourse. I can recall in the beginning of the semester when you mentioned Dominant Discourse I was confused but to shy to say anything. After the exhibit I was finally able to completing understand that Dominant Discourse addresses issues that issues and is expressed through art, music, poetry, poster boards, etc. There are no boundaries when it comes to Dominant Discourse. Your class lectures were extremely important for me because I was not able to commit to going on transform.dom. However, I was able to print the weekly articles from the Habermas website and produced weekly journal entries. It has been a pleasure being part of a very interactive class"......................Denita Trowel SOC 367. Denita your undersatnding of dominant discourse is mixed up with several other concepts. Look at Kelly Payne's explanation on Message No, 2412 on transform_dom. jeanne | ||
| Vasquez, Dolores De Amor | "Hao, That is definately a topic that doesn't come across in conversations regarding America's involvement in so many wars across the globe. From knowing a handful of soldiers who have been abroad and seeing them go from civilians to "killing machines" I have reacted sometimes negatively to their pompousness and imperialistic attitude and can clearly understand why the cultures of other nations get disrespected by (in general) these men and why they in return hold such a disdain for our country. Do these soldiers get diversity training?...I don't think so." Message 1511. I'm glad that you responded to Hao; it has to be hard to venture to tell us that sometimes we do not listen in good faith to the Other. "I really like this concept of teaching with the students' subjectivity holding the same credibility in the discourse as what the teacher has to teach. It is taking us from being passive players in our own education which I feel influences our citizenship in society. I think if we were more active in our pursuit of knowledge we would hold ourselves more responsible for our actions; in school as well as in our daily lives. My "A mobile grows in L.A." exhibit does just that: It shows how our interaction "our personal touch" can help to balance that overwhelming feeling that sometimes comes over a person when they are faced with all the information overload, red tape, political rhetoric, institutionalized discrimination, and the overall unhealthy and "self" perpetuating environment of the SYSTEM. It follows one of your latest lectures on making sure you take care of "you" in order that you don't forget your basic human needs and in order to have the foundation to deal with our complex world." Message 1508 I think you've expressed the concept very well in your exhibit mobile. "It seems like the conclusion a lot of disciplines are arriving at lately is that not one discipline is the end all which is probably why I am taking a course in Psychological Anthropology instead of just Anthropology or the Sociology of Law instead of just Law - I couldn't agree more. Like religion, we could all come away with something from each-I personally find answers in all of them and am no longer strictly Catholic-call me a hypocrite but I am a more fulfilled one at least. After seeing "What the ##@$% do we know", the movie on Quantum physics and spirituality, I was uplifted! To see that science and mysticism doesn't have to clash anymore or be on opposite ends of the pendulum where the two may never meet was cause for personal joy. My ontological hope has been rekindled! At this time of the year when we all become introspective, Jeanne, that was a timely piece. I am realizing too that in order for us to have answerability it has to start somewhere, and within ourselves and our family is the best place to start perhaps? It was one of the themes of my project. Re: my project. I am so pleased that it was a hit and of course it belongs to the Naked Space gallery. I would like to bring it home and put some additional labels on it to make it clearer and because my family wanted to see the finished product. I truly enjoyed the Gallery and it's many thought provoking displays and hope that next year we can have a larger audience." Lori Vasquez. Message No. 2171 Lori, of course, your take the project home and share it with your family. I didn't mean to take it from you. I just want you to work with us on creating some collective mobiles using your technique, with different themes, to take into the classrooms of young people and out to the community next semester. Of course, you can adapt it. We'll help if we can. It's in a box on the right hand wall of my office as you enter. Betty will let you in, and you can pick it up, or I'll leave it with her, if that will help. You did an extraordinary job. jeanne | ||

| Zalapa, Ruben Jeremias | "I visited Dave Leip's web page and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I know Bush won the election and I did see mostly blue states across the map at the end of election day BUT I had no idea that in California there were so many counties that supported Bush. California has sort of been a democratic given on election day but I couldn't see how it would continue to be democratic by Leip's map. There was blue everywhere! I mention the map to a couple of friends of mine and they didn't believe either. Living in Los Angeles we forget that there are others out there and they too have there own concerns and reason for voting for there candidate. This election has made me aware of how divided we are." Whoa, Ruben. Blue is Democrat. Red is Republican. Go back and look again, and tell your friends, too. Also, consider the topic of the week there and notice that we may not be as divided as the maps show. That's what happens with bifurcation. Let me know you understand this. jeanne "My project was the collage of junk food and political cartoons with interesting facts and numbers about obesity. I also made another poster exhibit to go along with it.That one also included a collage of junk food, but with a twist. It had two bags one filled with junk food (really gross) and the other bag filled with veggies. The purpose was to make it obvious to the public that a healthy life style is best to have. Anyway, I chosed this topic because I recalled how you mentioned how unhealthy Snickers are and that in London they were doing something it about this issue. It upset me to hear that this hasn't been attmepted here in the U.S. There are huge business that are profiting from making us unhealthy and our Government is not doing much, if anything, about this serious problem. I just wanted to make people aware of what's going on around them. Maybe they do not see anything wrong with the foods they choose to eat but through my exhibit they will take note of this issue and perhaps change their course of eating habits." Message No. 2059. I'm glad that you recognize the importance of awareness, and of bringing that awareness to consciousness. I think that these last weeks really helped you catch up a little, but I'd still like confirmation that you understand the red/blue split in the country, and that you can relate your project more deeply to the FDA and the law. C until I hear more from you. jeanne | ||
| Zamora, Maria | "Dear Jeanne, Soc 367 and Soc 370 made me realize that there is nothing wrong with opening up and speaking up our opinion. I have learned to respect other people's opinion. . . .There were many important topics to cover this semester due to the presidential election. I learned to open up and discuss about the elections with my family and friends. . . . The exhibit was a great experience. I was there both days throughout the day. At the exhibit I helped out with the Parking lot project. I helped out collecting signatures and providing people with information regarding the parking lot issues we have here at school. It was surprising that many people had no idea that there are about one-third parking spaces for the total amount of students enrolled at CSUDH, and that there are less spaces than the number of parking permits sold. I really hopes that this project motivates the students to speak up so we can get something done about the parking at school. . . . . On the first day of the exhibit, I noticed there was a project on 'Elder Abuse.' Since I had information on reporting elder abuse at work, I made copies of 'WISE- Senior Services' pamphlet and provided them for the project during the exhibition. More information on these services and how you can help can be found at http://www.la4seniors.com/ombudsman.htm . . . . Many people hesitate and don't report adult abuse. Everyone is encouraged to make reports of suspected elder abuse, for more information on reporting here's a good link http://www.canhr.org/abuse/abuse_reporting.htm . I was unable to provide copies of Soc 341, this form is may be used by any person, to report adult abuse. A copy of the form may be accessed at http://www.dss.cahwnet.gov/pdf/SOC341.pdf . . . . This was a whole new and different experience for me. I really enjoyed seeing how we all have different opinions and that we will not always agree on a topic. But we can all voice our opinions and express our thoughts. . . . Happy Holidays! Elena Zamora" Message No.2303.Thank you so much for getting this in. I'm sorry that there were those of you I just couldn't find material for. We set up transform_dom too late in the semester, and my filing system isn't working perfectly. Your elder abus project was outstanding. More later. jeanne | ||
