Meetings Across DistanceI've included the correspondence that preceded this acceptance and preparation for the March conference to make the whole process more transparent for you. Because we have so many projects in progress, Susan and I can submit material for conferences several months in the future and still permit students to participate by coordinating the conferences with where we expect to be in our website and listserv.Today, Susan sent this email request for the names of those students who would be participating in the ACJS Roundtable. That's the criminal justice conference that takes place in March. When Susan sent in the proposal, she listed, as we always do, student participation. Between now and March there would be time to raise money so that some of you could go. Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences National Meetings, March 15-19, 2005. Chicago, Illinois.
What Susan and I arranged was that the most likely focus for our roundtable would be the topics of the week for the last two weeks on a nation-state divided, and on a world divided and positive approaches to both. Since ACJS wanted specific names I picked the first five that came to mind of students who have written and I thought would like to be included.
Armando Garcia, George Wilkins, Penny Sylvis, Sawsan Mansour, and Benjamin Wayne Plaisted
If others of you would like to be included, let me know. Here's what I'd like, since some of us probably won't be able to go. I'd like you to provide via Transform or the Site a picture, a paragraph on your intellectual and career interests, how you see your relationship to criminal justice, and how you see practical ways to apply what you've learned about transforming dominant discourse to moving towards social and criminal justice. You could do this paragraph or two, i.e. no essays, together or separately as you wish.
I'd like you to prepare a set of questions you'd like to propose on the topic of A Nation, A World Divided, and prepare some plausible answers that you think might bring people into an illocutionary and governance discourse.
All ACJS wants now is your name, address, etc. The material for the round table won't have to be completed until February in time for the March conference. Susan will then have both your bios and these positions you have taken to share with the group at the roundtable at ACJS (Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences). They want:
- Name:
- Affiliation: California State University, Dominguez Hills; Department of Sociology
- Mailing Addresses: Dept. of Sociology, c/o Prof. Jeanne Curran, CSUDH, 1000 E. Victoria, Carson, CA. 90747.
- Phone numbers: 310-243-3831
- Email addresses:
If others would like to be included, I'd like the same from you. If you want your name included in the program, notice that Susan has limited time. You need to get that information to her asap.
Just so you have a realistic picture of the world out there I've reproduced the whole email sequence for you:
From jeanne to Susan, Saturday night, November 13, 2004:
Student names: Armando Garcia, George Wilkins, Penny Sylvis, Sawsan Mansour, and Benjamin Wayne Plaisted . Now, if you'll tell me what they're for, I'll have them match their non-appearance with an exhibit in Naked Space, and send you those to share. love and peace and insanity, jeanneAt 03:31 PM 11/13/2004, you wrote:

Susan, in theory, when you posted the email submission through the ACJS home page, your message is automatically transmitted to me AND the program committee at John Jay. I determine if it stays in my category or if the submission needs to be forwarded to another topic coordinator. If it gets transferred, I notify the original author of the abstract as well as the folks at John Jay.
After the deadline has passed, the committee will then review the entire offering of abstracts. At that time the program will begin to be organized for March. The fact that I don't have your submission could mean a glitch in the process or like I said, I somehow deleted your submission.
Now that I think of it, I could check with the folks at John Jay but it may be quicker if you don't mind, for you to re-submit your abstract.

Thanks for the clarification. I hope we're not experiencing problems with the email submission format and I particularly hope that I did not inadvertently delete your original message. I'm glad you double checked.

Susan, I apologize for any inconvenience you've experienced.
I have checked both my email file and the hard copy file and am unable to find your abstract submission. There has been a problem with the fax number published under my name and I haven't been getting all of those (....the fax number belongs to another department on campus).
Please forward me the abstract again to this email address.
Thanks for your interest in this year's meeting! Dave
