Working Together to Keep History Alive

Entry by Stanford L. Davis, Special Education.

"Fair use" encouraged.

On Monday, March 4, Stanford Davis sent us all these links on the Buffalo Soldier. We are incredibly grateful. This means that the Dear Habermas site is beginning to accomplish its goal of bringing educators together to make sure that the elements of a liberal undergraduate education are available, free, to all.

The problem Mr. Davis addresses is one that has plagued us all. Links that are invaluable for teaching disappear when we least expect it. And they are no more. This has led us to backup everything we possibly can. But we are learning as we go, and many of our old links have disappeared. I hunt for them. But sometimes they really are gone. Website owners change campuses, campuses change policies, and in the meantime, our smaller libraries are hopelessly strapped for funds. The availability of summaries or excerpts makes it possible for the reader to choose amongst the many sources to make a reasonable request for interlibrary loans, which also cost dearly in times of budget crisis.

Perhaps over time we will relocate many of the lost pieces through the help of people like Mr. Davis. Meanwhile, here are the Buffalo Soldier links, as of March 4, 2002, and I'll backup as much as I can. jeanne

Mr. Davis' message of Monday, March 4, 2002:

Subject: Submission of a Link

Hello Jeanne Curran,

I am submitting the Webpage http://www.buffalosoldier.net/CathayWilliamsFemaleBuffaloSoldierWithDocuments.htm as an on-line historical resource to your visitors, and to the WWW community. backup

I am a retired special education teacher, whose grandfather, and Great-grandfather served in the Civil War. Later, my Great-grandfather served in the Indian Wars as a Buffalo Soldier in Company D of the Tenth U.S. Cavalry 1867-1877.

The Cathay Williams Webpage is one alternative to the broken link I had on my site http://www.buffalosoldier.net and in a small way, an effort to fill the vacuum which occurred with the demise of www.femalebuffalosoldier.org Web site. I understand there were legal problems.

http://www.buffalosoldier.net, presents multicultural as well as multimedia experiences, and was created with the objective of enhancing educational, genealogical, and historical research activities. It is a not for profit site, whose links are chosen for their content in support of maintaining a healthy, and informative Internet environment. (Kid Safe) These are a few of my other authored sites/pages (Personal Links*) which are located on page five of BUFFALO SOLDIERS & INDIAN WARS. The bibliography can be found at http://www.buffalosoldier.net/bibliography.htm.

I know you're busy, so I'll just say thanks for taking the time to evaluate the pages. Keep up the good work.

Thank you,
