Empathy and Responsibility Be Damned: Defining the Capitalist Purpose
This lecture is in response to Greg's request that we define what we as liberals (I'm beginning to want to take "liberal" back from the conservatives - I don't want them to privatize me, but I'll come back to that, from Lakoff) mean by the primary purpose of government. Last night I read till 2 a.m. Geroge Lakoff's don't think of an elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate. It had been in the pile of books on this crowded (let's face it, chaotic) desk of mine for months, but I hadn't had time to read it. But since this social issue has the spotlight on transform_dom right now, I figured I needed to get to Lakoff.
Arnold had court this morning. left early, and left the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the cat in bed with me. Eyes barely open, I scanned the New York Times front page. Eyes grew wide.
Headline: Pension Battle May Entangle Mogul's Home. p.A1, February 3, 2006. I've been reading about this. CEO's building homes so large in residential areas, the other residents file suits to stop them, on the grounds that castles aren't single residences, for which the areas are usually zoned. They're called "trophy homes." You know, like "trophy wives." Talk about phallic-inspired imagery!
This is exactly what Lakoff was talking about. Empathy and responsibility be damned. I've got the "trophy wife, the "trophy house," the "trophy body" (not a "girlie man, me"), and never mind that workers' lives have been shattered for me to display my trophies to my fellow "trophy buddies."
So, Greg, there's lots that I need to tell you about my definition of the purpose of government and the pupose of humans and the purpose of God for humans. I need for you to know how I think, as a liberal. I'll try to break this into manageable bites, but I think I'm gonna have to write it all at once. So much for finishing the syllabus. And this is retirement!!!
Meanwhile, I want you to take a look at the article that knocked me right out of bed this morning:
