Shane Tokunaga   Prepared:  William Oliver- Reflections On Black Manhood

Reading the story reminded me of a poem that I once heard.  The title of the poem is called "Incident" and it was written by Countee Cullen.

Incident

by Countee Cullen

Once riding in old Baltimore,
   Heart filled, head filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
       Keep looking straight at me.

Now I was eight and very small,
      And he was no whit bigger,
And so I smiled, but he poked out
      His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."

I saw the whole of Baltimore
       From May until December;
Of all the things that happened there
       That's all that I remember.

Hey Jeanne, how are you doing? I tried to send my response to William Oliver, which is about a page and a half double-spaced, and my server crashed and lost everything. I am sad that this happened. I am also too tired to type it up again. So this is what the computer age will be like, huh?

On that you need to read Nicholas Burbules' Risky Promises. But, yes, we're a long way from all this infrastructure really working. On the other hand, it's much more efficient than paper. Trust me. And much more conducive to interactivity.

One of the very real issues is that all seem to be running on the fast track, with many conflicting demands: job, family, and greater demands for understanding why we're here and what it's all about. In a way, that's hopeful. We are perhaps beginning to ask ourselves the right questions. We'll give you time to talk about Oliver on Wednesday. jeanne
