Doing Something

Sociology, as the study of society, covers almost everything. One of the things I like about sociology is that whatever I do, well, it's sociology. So, I can work for peace, I can work with children to expand their access to education and art, I can work on needs assessment studies to help figure out what our community needs most, or I can do surveys and interviews to help my community figure out what community members are experiencing. I can even work at computer games to see what happens when Greens and Blues move into the same neighborhood. Will the Greens reject the Blues? Will they welcome the Blues? And we could do a simulation in which we could manipulate different variables, like education, ethnicity, religion, and then move our Greens and Blues about to see how these different variables will affect their integration or segregation.

All of that is sociology.

Some of you don't want to do computer simulations, or run SPSS statistics on survey data, or test experimentally whether boys and girls learn best when separated in different schools. Some of you just want to go out and change the world, make it better, help the boys and girls learn better wherever they happen to be, together or separate.

This about a thesis project for someone who wants to "do something" to make "it" better.
