Index of Topics on Site Frequently Asked Questions about Missing Classes and Misunderstandings of Concepts

    Missed Classes

How do I find out what I missed in class?

      • Link on the Site Map on Lectures.
In these first couple of weeks lectures sometimes work across classes because we are learning together the basic theoretical concepts on which I base most of my teaching. Your clue to whether the lecture fits your class is whether the concepts are ones that we are discussing in your class.
      • Link to Lectures for comments and submissions by other students who were present. Or look for them under Social Theory Across Disciplines on the Weekly Issue..
      • Link on the Site Map to to This Week's Issue because that provides the impetus for most of our class discussions.
      • Take the time to get to know friends in the class, so you'll have someone to ask.

Try not to miss class. The university requires attendance.

    Didn't Understand a Concept

You talked about answerability in class today, and I don't understand it. What should I do?

    • Link on the Site Map to the Lectures. Link also to Concepts to see if See if you can find one or more lectures on answerability. If you can, read them. That will help you find more specific questions than "I don't understand." Maybe you don't understand why we speak of non-answerability when no one has ever told you that you couldn't answer. That makes it clearer to me what you don't understand. Even though no one says you can't answer, we are talking about the corporation's or the agency's or the institution's willingness to listen to what you say in good faith. The fact that you can say anything you want doesn't help if, nobody bothers to listen to and to do something about what you say.
    • Look for commentary on answerability on the Lectures page. Sometimes reading how someone said it in other words will help to clear up your understanding.
    • Talk to jeanne or Pat if you can catch us between or after classes or in the office.
    • Ask about answerability in the next class. If you are timid, and would rather not ask, pass a note to Pat or Marlene or jeanne, if you can get my attention. Once I get to class, I'm ususally caught up in ongoing conversations. But Pat or Marlene will get my attention. If you're not sure about answerability. Take my word for it, there are others who aren't so sure either.

  • What to Do When I Don't Understand Week 3, Week of September 8, 2003, written in response to student questions. jeanne
