How do I start a thesis project?

The best preparation I can think of for writing a thesis project is to start in with a group that's presently writing. That way you have someone to commiserate with, you have models to follow, and you can actually see what it feels like. Then you can decide whether you actually want to write a thesis or whether you prefer to take comps.
