Giddens deplores the way that sociologists seem to focus either on individual agency or on social structure. His structuration theory bridges the gaps in meaning from the early sociological constructs of structure to an updated interpretation that Giddens believes makes a better theoretical model for the 21st Century.

He compares the old sense of structure to the frame of a building or to an anatomical skeleton. The structure to which Giddens refers is much more complex than the old fixed and immutable structure of which we commonly speak. Giddens sees the modern construct of structuration as not external to the individual, but as interdependent with the individual.
