The Little Red Hen
a college teacher
worried a lot
that her students would not
learn what they ought
. . . . . too many distractions
. . . . . too much to do
. . . . . they just didn't study like they used to.
Determined
she nattered and fretted
for the sky was falling,
falling apart, actually
holes in the sky
letting radiation through.Hold it up
hold it up
patch it, she admonished,
as her chicks stood around confused.Then from afar, came the sound of alumni,
clucking at the chicks' failure to act
We're trying, cried the Little Red Hen.
Madame, barked the head of the Alumni Association,
YOU are trying. And you have done well. You have taught our children they must strive together for the common good. Now, off you chicks, each to the skills you brought when you came, and what you have learned in all the fields. One teacher, one discipline, cannot hold the sky alone. But together, with the discourse she taught you, with good faith listening to every good idea you spawn, the sky is OURS to repair, for it is ours to live under, together and at peace.
