Catastrophe is hard to face. Our minds tend to protect us by blocking out as much as possible. If we are lucky, we have no memory of the tragic occurrence. I have no memory of the car crash that broke my neck. Until recent stories by survivors of the WTC attack, I didn't realize just how lucky I was. I do not waken with nightmares reliving the crash. That doesn't mean there is no affect. I scream at odd moments for the least little shock. I am frightened of small things, like cars whizzing by too closely. Or the unexpected touch of someone I did not know was close by. But nightmares and reliving the crash, no. I have been spared that.

A Nation Challenged A New York Times Special Section, Sunday, September 30., 2001. In that section is the story of the trauma of survival: For Haunted Survivors, the Towers Fall Again and Again By Andrew Jacobs. September 30, 2001. "Inez Graham is at war with her memory. She spends her days sobbing and afraid, battling images of flames and falling debris and trying to quell the soundtrack of screams in her head. A ringing phone, a plane overhead or a passing truck make her hunker down in fear. She refuses to go outside." Fear and Misery for Afghan Refugees By Douglas Frantz. September 30, 2001. New York Times.
