Census Bureau, Community Facts

Behavioral Objective: Learning How to Get Local Community Information from the Census Bureau on the Internet

The resources for this interactive project were garnered from The U.S. Census Bureau and in Census bureau and Community Facts.

The questions below can be answered either from the report you created from Census bureau and Community Facts or from Compton Data.

  1. What percentage of Compton students were enrolled in private school in 1990?

    One Plausible Answer

9 %. Notice that you don't have to calculate the percentage. The U.S. Census Bureau has done that for you.

  2. Is it true that the largest percentage of Compton citizens reporting in the 1990 Census had less than a ninth grade education?

    One Plausible Answer

No. 37, 830 had less than a ninth grade education. But 38,012 had a high school diploma. What would you say to an interpretation that most people in compton had a high school diploma or higher? That the statement was factual, but misrepresents the high percentage of non-high school educated. This is how people "lie" with statistics, by not giving the situational definition upon which their facts are based. Beware.

  3. Did most people in Compton live in the same house in 1985 as they did in 1990, or had most of them moved about?

    One Plausible Answer

About half the Compton population reporting in the 1990 Census had lived in the same house five years earlier. (156,224 of 281,251 among those over 5 years of age and over). Note that the statistical information is not accurate if I don't report that only those over 5 years of age were counted.
