This project, funded by IRA over the last 13 years, requests funds to bring Professor Derrick Bell, New York University School of Law, for our traditional moot court performance before a full audience in the University Theatre. Prof. Bell, who filled our auditorium when he came four years ago, will also asked to stay an extra day to aid us in our 14th year evaluation of the Stanley Mosk Undergraduate Moot Court. The activity will thus include student participation in a professionally led evaluation of a 14-year program, and student performance in legal argument with Professor Bell and our traditiional panel of local Judges of Los Angeles and California courts.
The project will also undertake to train in legal reasoning and argument skills, students who will then present their research on major social issues, such as school and young adult violence, using their newly acquired legal skills, which will also comprise the legal argument presented in the auditorium performance.
Continued on Attachment A.
To train students in oral argument and presentation, and to provide both an academic performance showcase in which our students can exhibit their skills through arguing in a public forum with eminent scholars and judges, and to provide opportunities for presentations of their written work in professional conferences.
To accustom students to process of peer review, as they submit their papers.
A full-scale evaluation of this program is scheduled for 2000-2001, which is one of the reasons we wish to ask Professor Bell to spend an additional day with us. In addition, the Process Texts, as we work on the student presentations are on the Dear Habermas site, as are student contributions to our work. All papers for presentation are available on Dear Habermas. In addition, the first stage of this evaluation is already available at Creation of a Virtual Academic Community.
