Two Face, the Villain

Two Face, Also Known as Janus

My teacher caught me reading a Batman and Robin comic book with a villain named Two Face. She called my mother to tell her that I was going to stay after school because I was reading a comic book again. My mother agreed that I should stay after school. She told me that if I liked Two Face so much that I should draw a two faced person. When I got home, I drew the two faced person. I looked at my drawing, and I knew what my mother was trying to say. In a book anything can happen, and it sounds like fun, but would it be funny if it happened to you?

Did it ever happen to anyone? Yes, my teacher told me. It happened to the Roman god, Janus. It could be pretty scary, couldn't it? With a face to watch you, either way. That is probably why there were so many superstitions about the two faced god. We say that people are two faced when they say one thing and mean another. It must be like having another face inside that doesn't look like the one you see.

Janus was the Roman god of doorways, archways, and beginnings. "The month of January is named for him, and his festival took place on January 9." He was much involved in the superstitions of comings and goings, especially of the Roman army. He is often represented with a double-faced head.
