What do you mean, you're not calling my name?"

Have you ever noticed that just as you finally get there,
they close the door, and change the rules?"

SPRING BREAK
Nota bene:

  • The Gotta Study Icon Gotta Study Icon takes you to the Index of Jeanne's classes - Preparations.

  • The "Birdie" Icon Table of Contents Birdie Index takes you to the Table of Contents Index for Journal Issues. The "Birdie" Index will eventually be the contents minus the announcements for classes. Hopefully, it will be less confusing to those not sharing our classes. We have just begun the process of separating the two. jeanne, April 2001.

You Gotta Read This!

  • Education Trust "Efforts to improve elementary and secondary education will have limited effect unless postsecondary education also changes the way it does business. High standards, rigorous curriculum, good teaching and accountability for results are the key elements to making K-16 education work for all students." Good material for exam essay.
  • Carnival Harlot Poem by Rebecca MacLaughlin at UWP.
  • Sites from the Lunatic Fringe Good commentary. Seemed appropriate for this week, as we approach Easter, and the Christian renewal in Jesus' sacrifice for humanity. I didn't actually visit any of the sites listed. I was feeling a little fragile. jeanne
  • We Are Always More Than Our Pain: Beyond Basquiat By bell hooks . To access Beyond Basquiat, link to Learn on the menu across the top of the page, and then, in the left-most frame, to Multiculturalism, and then scroll down about an inch and link to Beyond Basquiat in the section of articles by bell hooks. This is a great article that summarizes much of what we have said about Basquiat in Moot Court and in Criminology. Thought you might like it for your essay exam. jeanne
  • One World, One People Link to Learn link to Learn. Scroll down 3/4ths of the file, to European-Americans, and link to One World, One People Again, says much of what we have said in class.
  • Shared Discourse on Crouching Dragon, Hidden Tiger Respond to Wei Wei at weiw1974@yahoo.com, but cc me, please. jeanne
  • The Black and Blue ". . . fighting the corporatization of the university and the rightwing onslaught in society-at-large." This is left perspective on many of the issue we discuss. jeanne
  • new formations "new formations has established a reputation nationally and internationally as Britain's most significant interdisciplinary journal of culture, politics and theory. It brings new and challenging perspectives of cultural analysis to bear on the cutting edge of politics. Always at the forefront of intellectual debate, new formations has covered issues ranging from the seduction of perversity to questions of nationalism and post-colonialism." Some material online. Not much, but titles of articles in each issue.
  • The Trouble with Tolerance More from Tim Wise: documents: New Social Movement Network. This is a very important piece, much like the White Denial in School Shootings piece that touched so many of you. This piece speaks to the kind of paradigm shift "towards mutuality," but not to the exclusion of adversarialism. This is a good reminder that tolerance can lead to complicity.
  • empowerment Poem by jeanne.
