Guelph Getting Down to the Last Stretch in the Semester

"Well, yes, but Fellman's approach is similar to that of postcolonialism, without the emphasis on empire. But Henry and Milovanovic seem to emphasize alterity also. And then Spivak seems to separate out racism and sexism from colonialism, except that . . . well, aren't they all structurally violent?"

Have you ever noticed that ideas just won't stay in a single course?
They keep spilling over into the whole apperceptive mass."

Art We've Been Studying and Painting:

  • Jean-Michel Basquiat and Critique by cavan wee. "If Cy Twombly and Jean Dubuffet had a baby and gave it up for adoption, it would be Jean-Michel."
  • Hyped to Death The NY Times 1998 review of Basquiat's life. Large collection of black and white images. And first two chapters of Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art online through this NY Times piece.
  • 20th Century Chinese Art : Traditionalism meets Modernism by cavan wee. As we consider learning to dance lightly with one another, it behooves us to look at the transitions in each culture, including the transition to Postmodernism. Discussion questions up soon!

You Gotta Read This!

  • lingling Ubuweb site. This section of the site is definitely dark humor, so don't take the children there. There's an occasional variation on the F word, but not a lot. Mostly it speaks of the life of the streets. Link to the found and insane dialog box by clicking on the little down arrow. Then click on one of the found visual poems, and, when it's highlighted, press Enter. DO NOT start this if you have homework! Discussion Question: What do these found poems tell us about the dominant discourse on the streets of New York City?

For partial restoration of your sanity, now's the time to read (re-read) Tim Wise's The Trouble with Tolerance

Shared Readings: Languages Other Than English:
