Saturday, June 21, 2003: The balance between chaos and structure, like the balance between the individual and the social group, has a lot to do with understanding freedom. Maybe we should start with what this painting says to you, and then I'll try to tell you what I was feeling. jeanne
Monday, June 22, 2003: Part of the chaos lies in the sheer enormity of material we ask you to cover in a liberal arts education. Part of the chaos lies in our misunderstanding of the word education. There is "banking education," as Freire describes it, in which you try to commit the basic knowledge base of your culture to memory. Consider Hirsch's Cultural Trivia. Dumping things randomly into your apperceptive mass when you're sleep deprived and conflicted by differing agendas does not lead to cognitive comfort.
Out of the mass of lived experiences, you need to draw some structure, some organizing principles, that will let you more easily categorize what you are learning, so you can find it again when you want or need it. This isn't easy. I've been trying to do this with Dear Habermas for more than four years. Finally, after being totally immersed in the chaos of all this learning for so long I had begun to despair, a new and more reasonable structure is beginning to emerge. That's what happens when you're writing a book or a thesis, or when you're trying to make sense of a world gone near mad.
This is only the first week of structural revisions, and I know there's lots more to come, like the indexes and bringing them up to date, and making them workable for all of us. Notice that the structure has developed interdependently with the content. We have only slowly figured out what our most intense goals are, and only recently find ourselves able to realize those goals in a context that promises to work for all of us.
