"I just wanted to send you this picture that I drew. You really inspired me to use art as therapy this past semester, and I wanted to show you what I drew. I call it Fall 2001. It symbolizes how chaotic the latter half of 2001 was, but at the same time it displays the notion of beauty amongst the chaos. I don't think this is a masterpiece, but I am very proud of it. It is the first piece of art that I created that I feel is really art. I was not trying to go for anything specific, I just started with the Triangle in the upper area of the picture, and kept going."I didn't use any of the fancy paints that you have (I can't afford them), but I used markers, color pencils, crayons, and felt pens. I hope you like it. If you can find some time, will you give me some feedback on it?"
On Saturday, January 26, 2002, jeanne responded:
Ricky, It was with great pleasure that I moved Georg Baselitz to the Art section this morning, and gave Fall 2001 our place of honor for the this week's issue. I fuss a lot about being our only tech, but at a time like this, I am delighted to have control of our issues for instant changes. You sent that painting on January 16, and it took me ten days to get around to downloading it. I have no explanation for the delay, except that somehow this morning seems like this was meant to happen this way. Thank you for sharing your art with us.
love and peace, jeanne

We have until February 5, 2002, to edit, add end notes and bibliography. I will begin to edit the article by adding end notes, identifying theory connected to the issues discussed. I would appreciate if you would follow that and make your own suggestions.
We had to get this done with lightning speed. So consider the title. Let's see if we can come up with a better one.

- Cultural Context and Reintegrative Shaming in China and U.S.A. Associate Professor Deng Xiao-gang, Department of Sociology, University of Massachusetts--Boston; Professor Jou Susyan, Department of Social Studies, Taipei Normal College, Taiwan
"Braithwaite's reintegrative shaming theory argues that communitarian societies tend to put heavy emphasis on group obligations and mutual trust, and to rely on normative mechanisms to control people's behavior. Thus, these types of societies are more likely to use shame both as specific deterrence and general deterrence. On the other hand, those societies that tend to emphasize individualism are more likely to depend on stigmatizing, instrumental conditioning mechanisms to control undesirable behavior. However, those societies that are preoccupied with instrumental conditioning mechanisms are likely to experience more crime. We test Braithwaite's theory in two culturally diverse societies - China and the U.S. Our findings show some supporting evidence for the theory."- Comments on John Braithwaite's Theory of Reintegrative Shaming J. Scott Richeson. Link added January 27, 2002.
"According to Braithwaite, shaming is the key to controlling all types of crime. Stigmatization (bad shaming) increases crime but reintegrative shaming decreases crime. Reintegrative shaming means that expressions of community disapproval are followed by gestures of reacceptance. When we become outcasts, we reject our rejecters and shame no longer matters to us. "
