The Private Sphere: Elephants No Longer Needed
Farmers and circus elephants aren't unusual in the pain they suffer behind what we call growth and progress. Elephants were used for construction and transportation in Thailand up until very recent times. Now, with new industrial growth, the tremendous power and strength of the great elephant are no longer needed. What happens to laborers whose jobs have been superceded by modern technology? They are reetired to an elephant farm where they give rides to tourists. There is much fear for this species that is now obsolete in the workplace, replaced by new technology.
The elephant I show here is one I rode on in Chiang Mai. Read more of the story at No Longer Needed.
