All the names are up from the fourth week rosters. Please check to see if I misspelled your name, if you have all the courses next to your name for which you registered, and that I included you in learning records. Now, I'm going to start putting up the commentary, which I may or may not be able to get through tonight. Well, guess what? It didn't quite work out that way, did it?

The hardest part about interactive learning is that I can't make it happen alone. Every time I do, I learn something about me, but almost nothing about you. Hot clue, jeanne. Interaction means include the other. But how on earth do I do that with such large classes in a semester where President Bush keeps insisting upon giving a war? Who's got time and energy left to interact?

I had this magical fantasy that you would "get it" in class and just send me these wonderful brief messages to which I could say yes, yes, that's it, and we would all make up one wonderful illicutionary world on the way to public sphere governance. The only other time I ever had a fantasy like that was when the doctors told me I wouuld have scars on my forehead from the halo I had to wear for the C2 fracture of the neck. Scars! Hey, big deal. I was 60. I could handle that. Then they took off the halo, and I discovered I was all bloody and gory where the holes were in my skull and I looked like a truck had run over me. Reality! You gotta love it. It keeps topping every fancy.

So now we go back and try again, hoping this time to have included all of us in the process. The grades dated November 12 or later are ones that result from our discussions of your learning. Sometimes you've talked with me in the office, sometimes in a group that was spilling out into the office. Must remember to complain that we need a bigger office. Sometimes we've walked together across the campus. Sometimes you couldn't be here at all but we came to know each other through our Internet conversations. Sometimes you really wanted advice, from someone who understood and care. Sometimes you were just excited about what you were learning and wanted to share it. Sometimes you were pissed off that I just couldn't keep up with your demands on time. Yeah, well that's life, folks, when you're after something like this. Sometimes you just said thank you.

And if you ever wonder why Pat and I struggle so to go through this process, maybe this message from Irma Peinado on Tuesday, November 12, yeah this morning, will help explain it:

Dear Jeanne,
Thank you for responding and placing my comments and thoughts on your website. It gave me a clear insight on where I should improve. I will link my comments to what I have read. Thank you once again and have a great day, I will because I've been heard!

Your student,
Irma Peinado, formerly De Leon

What wonderful words, "I've been heard." Pat and Susan and I thank you, Irma. It's wonderful when every now and then a student reminds me you of just why you're doing all this work. If there is to be free and just democratic governance in this world, it will be because all our people can say "I've been heard." jeanne

This is further than we've ever gotten with illocutionary discourse. I had lot's of fun, even if it did contribute to wearing me out after that flu. The Chicago meetings are interrupting the process. I'm thinking of you, Will. I know you wanted me to get to your work. And Celestina, who sits over on my right in graduate theory, only Celestina, isn't right, but I always call you that. I can't just go pick out your messages and answer you. My messages aren't stored that way. They will be by next semester, but not yet. I'd love to go faster with this, but it has taken quite a while to figure out a functional format I could dump into a template. I'm tempted to just sit here and do it. But if I don't pack, Chicago's gonna be a little cold.

For now, I'm just going to put up the transaction grades I recorded in my office last week. I probably lost some. Don't panic. Now that I've got the format templated, we should be able to finish up the the whole procedure as soon as we get back. With your help, each of us will be heard this semester. So maybe I won't get it indexed. But, we can't be perfect, now can we?

love and peace, jeanne and Pat

    • Questions on structural organization. Because the media, politics, corporations are controlled by the economic and power spheres, how do we maintain authenticity? I think the way you put it, Carolyn, was that since our information is all bullshit, and that's OK as long as we know it's bullshit, how do we access real information? First of all, the technical term for what you're asking about is "dominant discourse." This is a good start to asking and delving into the big questions that really concern us.

Carolyn, try to get back to me on the structural organization. And where's your sister? September 2, 2002.
