Art, Dramaturgy, and Social Psychology
After TR Young

On Sunday, July 15, TR Young posted to PSN:

"There is, as well, a critical dramaturgy which goes well beyond the micro-analytic views of Goffman. In critical, macro-dramaturgy, the use of art, music, drama, and all the accouterments thereof are investigated as a growing cadre of public relations persons, consultants and advertizers to shape and pre-shape human understanding in politics, marketplace, conservative religion as well as academic itself."

Be sure to check TR Young's post on social psychology and Lauren Langman's response.

Note that the objections that TR Young and Lauren Langman register are mostly based on the exclusion of the voice of the masses, of the worker. This bears on our understanding of social injustice. How does that get us back to art and dramaturgy? Through the ability of art and dramaturgy to expand our imaginary, so that we can begin to hear the voices and validity claims we have denied for so long. This is a left perspective. For the right perspective, which I see as basically saying those who can have the right to, and should be allowed some exploitation of those who can't. That's the right perspective. Nozick. I fear it is a tension that will always be with us.
