"We as a great nation must not stoop low like the terrorists to bomb innocent children and mothers."
by Nnamdi Ibechem, Soc. of Law, CSUDH.On Sunday, September 16, 2001, Nnamdi Ibechem wrote:
Whenever a life is taken, it makes us all feel sad and angry. The horrible event that happened on Tuesday, the 11th of November, was one of the saddest days in American history. It not only destroyed lives and buildings, it also questioned our mortality and our sense of security as a nation that stands tall and proud. All Americans are angry, sad and want revenge, consequently, the president has vowed to bomb all nations that support terrorism or harboring this known criminal. In war people die, both the innocent and the guilty. we must find a better way to resolve this issue other than violence. We as a great nation must not stoop low like the terrorists to bomb innocent children and mothers. We must have restraint and use diplomacy and target only the group or groups involved for a definite resolution. We must bring this group for a discussion. We must have a task force on terrorism around the world to have an impact on this war.On Sunday, September 16, jeanne responded:
Welcome to the Dear Habermas community, Nnamdi Ibechem. I am glad to know you. I use your full name, for I do not know if I would violate rules of courtesy by using a first name. How little we know of other cultures, for we have lived in isolation so long. How much we have to learn so quickly now.I share your concern for innocent children and mothers. But I also am concerned for innocent soldiers. In a time of war, soldiers are called up to serve their countries. They are us. And they are as innocent as we are. They are sent to jail if they refuse to go. I do not think it any less blameworthy to label even "soldiers" as "guilty" or "innocent" simply because they have been called up to serve their country. This question of guilt and innocence is an important one we're going to have to ponder carefully in the near future.
May we all find the courage for self-reflection.
love and peace, jeanne
