Concepts:

  • participation - ":more widely accepted . . .that there can be no sustainable development unless people become the agents of their own development" Silvia Balit, in comment at White, Forward, at p. 9.
  • "no unique model" - Balit again. Major concession of answerability in the world of social justice. "There is now a general consensus that there is no unique recipe or model fo a participatory process or a participatory communication approach." Silvia Balit, in comment at White, Forward, at p. 9.
  • "with and of the people" - "Thus video pragram should be produced with and by the people, about their social problems, themselves, and just produced by outsiders." Silvia Balit, in comment at White, Forward, at p. 10.
  • Establishing trust - "This takes time, usually more time than traditional donor-driven projects foresee." Silvia Balit, in comment at White, Forward, at p. 11.

In our discussions, I don't want to limit us to video. White is concentrating on illiterate populations where she is forced to deal with that illiteracy. Our communities have far greater tools that they can apply to the visually expressive tools for community participation. Consider Marty Pottenger's project with City Water Tunnel # 3.
