And see Chip Berlet's answer at Re: The Swastika & the Crescent by Martin A. Lee by Chip Berlet 16 April 2002.

Louis Proyect on PSN on thursday, April 18, 2002 As it turns out, Lee's article is at the Southern Poverty Law Center: http://www.splcenter.org. Although Lee has some credibility on the left, most of us realize that the SPLC is a scam run by Morris Dees, who takes in millions of dollars through hysterical direct mail about the KKK while doing little to actually defend black people. Basically, Lee's article is typical of the sort of "analysis" done by the SPLC and the outfit that Chip Berlet works with. It sees the main danger as "extremism". In reality, the main danger to world peace and human rights literally comes from the center. For the past 20 years or so, American foreign policy has grown more and more lawless and violent. Whether it is Bill Clinton bombing medicine factories in the Sudan or liberal Democrats speaking at pro-Sharon rallies in Washington, we are confronted by a kind of incestuous relationship between both parties. The terror they have organized is much more ambitious than anything the KKK or al-Qaeda could have ever dreamed of. Louis Proyect
