Let's Talk Academic Discourse

Meeting! Meeting! Meeting!

We missed a lot of you on Wednesday. If that's not a good time e-mail me at Tjuen43@aol.com, and I'll gather all the suggested times. We'll try to put something together for Week 9 when jeanne gets back.

Welcome to our new sociology club, Let's Talk, designed to bring us all together to talk about the issues that interest us. Students in residential colleges have lots of
discretionary time to argue and sharpen their wits. We spend most of that discretionary time commuting. So we've set up this club to offer times when we can get together with each other and with faculty, staff, and administrators to share references, talk about things we've read, ask each other questions that might make us think.

Our primary requirement for membership is that you promise to try to remember to never say, "I disagree with you so much, we can't even talk." That's how wars begin. And this club is meant to bring us together as a family of scholars who are trying to prevent that impasse.

We'll keep discussion threads posted so those who can't make meetings can still follow and take part in the discussions. Meetings will vary by days and times so that as many as possible can find at least some time for face to face interaction, and we hope that someday we'll get a chance to meet with those of you who can't be here in real time. At least we can share in virtual space and time.

Join! Wisconsin, too!

Joining is as easy as subscribing to a listserv. Send an e-mail to jeanne with:

  • Subject Line: Join Let's Talk
  • Body of Message:

    • Your name.
    • Your e-mail address.
    • Your school.

We'll create a listserv, send you a schedule of meeting times, and e-mail you notes from our discussions at these meetings. Once the listserv is up, you'll be able to communicate directly with the whole group of club members. We'll teach you how. And we'll post discussions on the Dear Habermas site, so more of you will be tempted to join us! Wisconsin, we're hoping you'll find some real time to get together there.
