This essay started with an editorial by Maureen Dowd in the New York Times on Sunday, January 26, 2003: Portrait of a Laddie.I'm going to want you to notice her citation of Henry James. I'll put up sources for you on the Portrait of a Lady. This is an example of coded speech. Speech that contains information that only those with a special background, such as those who were in schools that had them read Portrait of a Lady, would recognize. One thing you need to learn in liberal arts education is that the relevance of what you study may be related to these codes that are related to inclusion and to power.
