Index of Topics on Site Tranforming Dominant Discourse on Library Quiet
The exam period heightened problems with quiet in study areas. Carly's original plaint that her concentration was broken by all the talking and cell phone calls led us to include the issue in our Naked Space Exhibit on Transforming Dominant Discourse. The librarians saw one of 400 flyers, advertising the exhibit, and mentioning the library issue, that someone had left on a car windshield. They contacted us to invite illocutionary discourse, as we had suggested on the flyer.

Carly has promised to pull together a delegation from the students who have expressed concern, and contact the library Dean. Meanwhile, since we are in the middle of exams, I set up this file to collect the comments that have been posted on transform_dom. How wonderful that your classes in changing the dominant discourse are giving you real examples of how you can make effective changes in your own environment.

  1. Quiet and Respect

    1. " Respect: I wanted to address an issue I have come across around campus. With the end of the semester coming closer I've been utilizing our library frequently. I believe I've dealt with a disrespect I'm not sure how to handle. Going to the library used to be a place I could go with silence. It seems to me, gone are those days. I consistently go to our library to study quietly and come in contact with people who are talking. I mean talking not even whispering. I've been on both the 3rd and 4th floors where people just talk and talk. It is very frustrating because I get sidetracked very easy. I want to say something but I'm not sure how to approach it. Any suggestions or anyone else have this problem? Am I being disrespected or am I overreacting? Carly james. Message No. 1622. Carly James

    2. "I don't know what library you work at, however, I know this for sure, the Inglewood Public Library has been quiet for years. They have rooms where groups can gather, and no one hears them talking." Yolanda Johnson. Message No 2166

    3. Group Study and Tutoring

      2. "In regards to the library issue, not only the local librairies are an issue but our own campus library. We have certain floors, and within all floors there are many individuals having side talk. Individuals having cell phone conversations, chips bags rattling, group discussions, etc. At times when we try to bring it to their attention they get offended and want to respond with an attitude. So in reality, our own library can't be a place to study. Another issue is the publishing of books and keeping updated material. They have so many old resources you can't even do research paper with current information or statistics. So we need to work on our own campus library. What should we do?" Evelyn Sepulveda. 4. Cell Phones Ringing and Cell phone Conversations

      2. "i've worked at the local library for five years and there's a big difference from when i went to it as a little girl. I'm sorry to say that quiet days at the library are gone. things are changing. The library no longer have just books, but computers as well. i've seen a lot of people who come to the library for many different reasons. Yes, people are forgetting that the library needs to be a quiet place because it is often the meeting place for study groups. often i have to remind people that other people need to study as well when someone is talking too loud. Another problem that is occuring often is people yelling into their cell phones. not only can i hear the whole conversation, but people just forget they are in a library. my advice to you is to tell the authority, like the librarian, to tell them to lower their voice. if you tell them yourself they might feel ofended, unless you like confrontations, then feel free to tell them yourself."
